I was in San Francisco the other day, and saw a hustler using the three card monte to steal money from tourists. Because I knew the method, I immediately wanted to participate to steal back the money from this con man. Didn't do it though, for fear that he'd come after me later on. I'm just curious, has anyone else here encountered that situation?

First thing to realise is that it is not one guy who you are dealing with.

It is a crew. Anywhere from 2-6 people depending on a lot of things. Same with the shell game. Your lucky you didn't try it. Besides he could have just not taken your bet. His buddy would put down a bigger bet, and the dealer will take that bet, and win it. You can't really do what you think you wanted to do.

Research the game a bit more and you will see what I mean. The sentiment is great, but you would get seriously hurt at worst, and just not accomplish it at best. Not worth it.

As much as magicians may know the moves and some routines, they really don't know the "game" which is far more. First thing is that the rules always change.
Funny thing is if you tried to put down that bet and he denied it as he would, then that becomes the hook! He uses that to show people that the "could have won". Heck you would actually be helping him.

I knew that more than one of the people were in on the three card monte, but didn't realize everything else that was involved. In hindsight I'm glad I trusted my instinct and didn't participate.

Did it with some gipsys in town. I really don't recommend it.

That was pretty good, heh.
