This is a two DVD set from Magic Makers, Inc. It starts off with a commercial for Magic Makers cups and balls, as well as their wand. This commercial is repeated at various times during the presentation.
Short version. Save your money and get the Ammar DVD's, instead. Although there are a couple of "advanced Eddy Ray" moves that are not on the Ammar DVD's, you learn more about the cups and balls, and consequently, about magic from Michael than from Eddy. Eddy starts with a "professional routine." This is basically the routine you learned when you bought your first set of Adam's cups and balls. Next, he teaches the nomenclature of the cups, mentioning that the mouth of the cup and the lip of the cup are the same thing. Sorry, Eddy. The mouth is the opening that is surrounded by the lip -- sort of like people. He teaches several moves, mostly standards, but he calls the Mendoza move the "advanced Charlie Miller move," fails to credit David Williamson with the Striking Vanish and fails to credit Flip with the Flip vanish. Maybe he thinks the Flip vanish is called such because of the way it works. He teaches the Francis Carlyle Proposition bet -- this is the one where you place a cup over a lacrosse ball, after giving the spectators a chance to bet whether it will fit. Don't try this with all of your MM and Penguin cups. It won't work with all of them. He plugs the cups by saying that the MM cups are the finest on the market. I wish he wouldn't do that. Anyone who has played with cups for any length of time can name four currently produced brands of cups that blow them away. 1) Johnson Products 2) RnT II (including the Sisti cups and the JES Magic Cups) 3) Van Dokkum Cups 4) Sherwood Cups. The explanations are dull and lackluster. Eddy looks very uncomfortable before the camera. The video could have used a bit of editing when he accidentally dropped balls. Also, he should watch Gazzo to learn wand management. He doesn't actually teach any routines, other than the "professional routine." Michael teaches three, plus he has a sequence of Vernon doing the cups and balls on television. The worst part is that I had to sit through two hours+ of this to write the review.

Im a bit of a sucker for c&b material so Ill steer clear of this one Any ideas on how I might get a salt load into the cup say a fourth load? |

If you have Martin's Magic by Martin Lewis, there is a method for loading a dice cup with tiny dice. That will work as a salt load as well.

Nope. I didn't get them free. I paid $49.95 for the set on eBay.
I'll admit that I watched it at 1.5x normal speed, because I wanted to get through it fairly quickly. But in critical areas, where I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything I watched it more than once at normal speed. The worst thing on the DVD was the Benson Bowl Routine. The routine was okay. It was too "okay." The patter was overly "okay." "The cups and balls is the world's oldest magic trick, okay." "I'm going to do it with this bowl, okay." "Yada yada yada yada, okay" "Blah, blah blah blah, okay" I hate that kind of speech mannerism.

Bill,
So is what you are saying is that you are not "okay" with "okay"? Okay. (grin) Mike P.S. Thanks for biting the bullet on this one. Now, possibly a hard question: What is your favorite Cups and Balls video (could be an old VHS tape) for learning basic cups and balls routines and moves--and why. Thanks a lot for the info.

Eddy Ray also has a 4 DVD set on card manipulations ( and one on CD manipualation ) that is the same way. I wonder why Magic Makers has picked him to do so many sets. No o ne seems to know him or are impressed with him.

I happen to like the dvd's myself. I know the guy and have seen him perfrom many times...that said...Bill, you said you watched at normal speed for the critical area. What were the critical areas you were looking for?
In this dvd set I was happy that there wasn't a total performance section. I feel for the cups and balls (to use a Daryl phrase) It's like jazz, you can select a definite begining and ending but in the middle we could just wing it sort of. I look at it this way, since I don't do the cups ans balls (at least not since I was a kid) and had wanted to learn this is a good dvd to pick up. If I want to copy a routine or two then maybe I'll pick up Ammars (since you said in your review Bill you said Ammar give three). And as far as the mentioning of the other MM items in the dvd -- well -- from Magic Makers point of view it was a good business idea. Maybe not from our point of view but from theirs. George |

Hi George,
Take a look at Bill's site. He is "the man" when it comes to the cups and balls and knows just about everything there is to know about them. Mark. http://www.cupsandballsmuseum.com |

The critical areas I was looking for more than anything was proper crediting of moves. His technique is good on some things, mediocre on others.
I have to disagree with the idea of not teaching at least one viable routine. If I purchase a DVD on any subject, I want to at least have a suggested viable routine. The "professional routine" at the beginning is not enough. To do a cup and ball routine, you need more than the parts. You need the transitions from one part to another. I strongly suspect that Eddy doesn't have a routine he can call his own. If you are going to learn how to do coin manipulation, you need to learn at least one routine. Let's look at a different subject -- music. If you buy a DVD on how to play the fiddle, you would hope that there would be some tunes on the DVD, so you could play something besides random scales. Eddy gives you lots of scales, but no tunes. Another thing that bugged me about this set is that his wand management is totally lacking. He does show some nice wand flourishes, although his handling of the second "through the fist" vanish is abominable. However, when he is working with the wand, such as during a vanish, he places the wand to the side without making it easy to pick up. One of the first thing Gazzo teaches is how to place the wand so you can pick it up without fumbling. Also, the idea of chickening out on the final loads is not good at all. He never shows a complete final load sequence. He shows the revelations, but not the whole loading sequence. All of this is important if you are going to have a "Complete" course in magic with the cups and balls. It's not as advertised. It's not "Complete."

I'm not the master. I'm still looking for him.
BTW, in case there is any question about watching a DVD at 1.5x -- my player gives me full sound at 1.5x and 2x.
