I was recently at the Magic Circle dealers day and saw this demod by World Magic shop. The trick went wrong and the spike went straight through the dealers hand, so no it is not 100% safe not by a long way and I also had a tentative try myself and the pull from the gimmick was not strong enough in my opinion to risk trying it. In other words I can see why it can definately go wrong as it did. The spike needs to be a couple of inches longer for this to be safe IMO. Or you would have to use very small plastic cups which would diminish the effect. If the people selling and marketing the effect can get it wrong so can others beware.

Nanaswan you are completely wrong with your statement and facts. The trick did not go wrong and we did not demo the effect. I can prove this by photographing mine and my business partners hands.
The person that did have a slight accident was not working for us and did not take the neccessary precautions. If a blind magician can perform this blindfolded then their is your answer. |

So the person who did get hurt was still allowed to try to perform it while not being 100% trained? And going straight through the hand is slight? more people need to post on their true experiences.

Just to confirm that the main dealer who I presume is Gochos showed me and a friend Gobsmacked. Another man behind his stand, I do not know if he was the business partner or not showed us Spike with Gochos watching on. I do not mind whether they sell 1 of these or 1 million of these I am only pointing out what I saw and my own feel on it when I tried to feel the pull on the gimmick. It doesn't matter who had the accident, the point is that they can happen with all these types of Smash and Stab effects. Now please let this thread return to actual purchasers of the effect.

I used to have Jumbo Smash and Stab, but sold it because I just couldn't muster up the nerve to smash my hand over a cup - even though I knew which cup had the spike.
I love the drama in this new Spike effect, but cringe when I watch the guy smash his hand down - I guess those Impaled Hand videos have made too strong of an impression on me. I'd love to get this Spiked, but I know I'll never do it. I think there will be some show late at night someday when I'm mentally tired, and will make a mistake and tear up my hand. Sigh. It sure looks good. Ron |

Wow...if it makes seasoned magicians cringe all the better! So hard to get a reaction out of these guys.

If you are looking for a routine that has tension, drama and a 100% safety factor built in, look at Higleys traps a mental Monte notes and the Abbot Daring Spring Trap.
When you demo the "bone" crush with the traps, trust me you have the audiences undivided attention. And I could care less which trap they pick. I do not run the risk of permanent damage if I follow the idiot proof, instructions. Even knowing that you are safe, it still takes a serious leap of faith( and some brass ones) to set off the trap the first few times. My coach refuses to let me even discuss adding "spiked" effects. He knows personally too many who have screwed up under a varitey of circumstances with a variety of methods. Good luck and be safe.

I used to be doing a mouse under one of three a polystyrene cups which I would squash with my hand until one was left.
It wasn't being dangerous to me but maybe was for the mouse. It only was going wrong once but the mouse was living afterwards.
Think not what magic can do for you, but what you can do for magic.

I have used Smash and Stab many times. I used to use the Jumbo version as for me it was the only one that looked dangerous enough for me. I didn't want a small, worthless looking Spike, I wanted a mean, dangerous looking Spike. With Smash and Stab, it really is almost impossible to get it wrong. I can't say impossible as people have got it wrong, but once you know the secret, it stands out like a sore thumb!!! The magicians I have spoken to all agree with me, that once you know the secret, if you mess it up, you should not have bought the item. I do the effect blindfolded and never got it wrong. I had my back turned whilst they were mixed, I had the blindfold put on me by a spectator, and when I turned around, I knew exactly where it was, even if after the first smash the mixed them up, I knew exactly where it was. If you read the instructions, even just the first 2 lines, you know how it's done and should not mess it up. I have no idea how they could mess it up, maybe just a lapse in concentration or something

Juan,
How is that mouse doing? Thanks for nice review Chris. I am still wondering what those UTube magicians used to this day. That dark red blood on the skinny guy's face really made me disinterested in the gimmicked versions but now Im back getting a lift onto the bandwagon. It was the dark red blood not the light red paper cut color. Blindfolded must really let the juices flow. Candini

I was thinking Spike can be used for something other then the spikes. You can use it as a clarivoyence type experiment finding objects. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Candini,
That is an interesting idea... Flirting with the possibility of permanent damage to my self is not something I relish. And anyone who says that they "Ver make a mistake" hasn't done enough performances. Sooner or later something, including fatigue, will jump up and bite you when it is most important that it doesn't. Perhaps using the concept to find the "skull" of doom out of 3 choices might play. Sure like the consequences better for the "Out"...

Let's put it in perspective...I'm guessing that here in the US you have a much better chance being injured by getting into your car and driving to the gig than you do performing SPIKE or any of it's effect like cousins. How many verifiable injuries could we come up with worldwide from these effects? I know of 2 that are on video. There were over 43,000,000 verifiable traffic related deaths in 2005 in the US....255,750 traffic injuries. If you really want to be safe...find a job you can work from home. I'll take my chances with the little 4" spike...it's not going to unexpectedly pull out in front of your hand and the chance of fatality is almost nil.

John, having tempted fate in ways that most people will never understand, I know that once you have looked very deeply into the abyss, you may not wish to be so cavalier with your life and appendages.
I still prefer the safe outs...

Ooops...that number in my last post should have been 43,000....not 43,000,000. That would be spooky.
I don't know why I am defending these dangerous effect to be honest. The less people that do them the better...in many ways. Luckily for those that prefer the safe outs there is shattered. I wonder if when I receive Spike I'll have enough faith to do the smash with my forehead. |
