Jim Steinmeyer has a wonderful trick called "Remote Control" which was published in a Genii awhile back.
I used it in a radio interview in Tucson once and it shocked the DJ so much, he actually cussed on the air (LIVE)! Can't get a more honest response than that.

It was removed due to some upcoming work on the site and problems with host company. Not sure if it will be up on the new site or not. Sorry for any inconvinience it might cause

Thanx Martin and Yaniv, those are impressive lists.I know this has nothing to do with cards, but in the Elmsley books there is a very good telephone trick involving a die.

My favourite card effect over the phone is still Eddie Fields' "Silent Transmission Telephone Mystery" from his book The Greater Artuful Dodges Of Eddie Fields, by Jon Racherbaumer (Kaufman & Greenberg).
I like it because its simple to do, yet so very powerfull. Do yourself a favour and check it out. Peo

Yaniv Deautsch mentioned this trick "Phone Trick" by Chuck Smit. This also appears in the book
Impromptu Card Magic (compiled by Aldo Colombini) on page 38. It’s a really cool trick. |

It's been many many many years since I've performed a telephone trick, but the one that I've been racking my brain is where I believe that I had a bunch of pre-written cards and I would then have the spec start to read out loud their cards and I would write each one underneath one of the other pre-written ones. Once one of them matched, then you'd know what their card was. I'm probably butchering what actually occurs, but does this sound like any effect that someone can point me to? Thanks so much!

Verbal Magic is an older book that has been recently reprinted, presumably to respond to the need for magic that can be done over Zoom The entire book has magic, mostly cards, that can be done entirely by the spectator by simply following your verbal instructions. Tamariz’s scripts in the book are based on a radio show he did and reflect his unique style. You can easily adapt the methods and patter for use over the phone or Zoom. |

Thanks Gordon! I'm trying to see if what I described earlier method wise would possibly be in the book, thoughts?

Hi Lunatik
Nothing specific comes to mind. Many of the tricks described in the book can also use pieces of paper or business cards instead of playing cards. The spec is asked to write in a number or draw an x on the paper. The common denominator throughout though is that the instructions are always very simple and clear - i.e draw a number or x, never a word or a sentence. Also, I have found that the tricks in the book are mostly rooted in mathematical principles. Maybe you might find some ideas in other math based tricks - Martin Gardner? |
