This group is for "mentalism and hypnosis'. But there are many who say that hypnosis does not belong in the realm of magic at all.

Since hypnosis can genuinely alter people's consciousness and open up new ways of thinking, perhaps hypnosis IS in the realm of magic, whereas card tricks are not!

What do you think?

It's what you make it! ...just as e.g comedy, juggling, etc, etc, has and hasn't a place in magic/mentalism.

IMO it is a loss to exclude it however, especially in mentalism where we often claim real powers of the mind - and someone elses mind. Hypnosis makes this latter claim also, so it should mesh well. Consider also the many mentalists that *do* employ hypnosis in their mentalism successfully.

(However, "be careful" not to mistake e.g mentalism for hypnosis, as it can be used as a mere presentational bit, rather than actually doing the real thing.)

Sincerely,

/M

Then there is pseudo-hypnosis, as in "flash hypnosis" or stopping my pulse, which I often use as a demonstration of how the mind controls the body as part of an explanation to the effects other than "it's all psychic"

As I move from Hypnotherapy into mentalism I am looking for angles that combine the two.
Working therapeutically, IMHO, definately incorporates aspects of cold reading.
The Hypno in me says that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis anyway.
Utilising hypnosis to learn the 'hidden' powers of the human mind is a powerful angle. I can definitely see where this can tie into the mentalists routine in some areas.
I know these comments are a bit disjointed.
A bit of stream of consciousness.
You could always do a real arm piercing/needle thru arm, using hypnosis as the anaesthetic, if you're really keen.

While not too sure about the blendiing of magic and hypnosis. One obviously, illusion, the other real. The blending of mentalism and hypnosis is IMO, natural as each adds to the credibility of the other. Derren Brown's recent work has blended the two as has, in the past, my Suggestive Mentalis, Orville Meyers Telepathy in action, and to a lesser extent IMO, Kentonism

Ford, great to hear someone else remembers Orville Meyers', Telepathy In Action. I may be wrong, but I think like some of Orville's works, it was ahead of its time. To my knowledge, it combines mentalism and "hypnosis" in a way no one else was doing or is doing today. Talk about a minimalist mentalism act, this is the ultimate. I believe, that a thinking mentalist could take that MS and turn it into a miracle act.

Well not exactly, I've been doing"Suggestive Mentalism since the late 80's an act based on Orville's booklet. Put out two booklets, Suggestive Mentalism An Introduction, And Suggestive Mentalism a Continuation. It's a seamless blend of mind reading and hypnosis, you not only read minds but control them

They are exclusice but not to PEA. Though release has been primarily within PEA. They are relatively expensive. So, I try to restrict sales to those who will understand how to use them. Which requires a working knowledge of both mentalism and hypnosis. I also usually rarely sell in the area that In work, [NY/NJ metro area]. Some people get annoyed because I won't sell to them. But I'd rather that than sell to some one who won't appreciate the act

Thanks for the information Ford. I can understand your thinking and motivation concerning your books. There is no law that says everyone has to have everything. Looking forward to your continuing to post in the mentalists' forum.
