Hi,
I am using a pretty standard sound system that I have used for some time now but as of last Saturday night, picked up a big hum in the channel that the mini-disc is routed to on the board. When the MD is "off" there is a big hum. I changed out every adapter and cord in the universe. Went from xlr to phone jack to rcas on other inputs and nothing helped. What am I doing wrong? My experience tells me that I probably don't know some simple tactic to reduce this problem. Thanks in advance for any "non-humming" input!

Ed,
1) plug player (same cables) into other channels. 2) plug player (new cables) into every channel. 3) listen to microphone in each channel. (to confirm it's not in output section of console) 4) listen to another playback device in each channel. If you try the above and after step #1 you have hum, try step #2, if it still hums we've eliminated the cables as the culprit. Now try step #3 in order to confirm that it's not in the output section of your console. If it still hums we've confirmed that it's either the MD player itself, or your console. If it doesn't hum after step #3 we've confirmed that it's in the MD player itself or the high impedance input of the board, but we know it's not in the output section of your board. If you plug in another high impedance playback device and it doesn't hum, it's the MD player, if it does hum with this new device, it's in the input section of your console. Either one indicates a repair. But.....before you do all of that, I'd make sure I had replaced completely EVERY single cable in the system. Usually, when a complete system begins humming and buzzing out of the blue it's cables 90% of the time. It's important to pull ALL the cables out of the signal path at once, including your output cables. If your hum goes away then you can put them back in one at a time to figure out which cable it is. If the cable replacement doesn't get rid of the hum, go through the steps above. It's not usually a hardware issue, but it certainly could be, especially if you move the gear from gig to gig. Also, you might try listening to your MD player through headphones before you do all of the above, and if it buzz'es through the phones, you're done....it's the player. Cheers, |

Ed,
What you are experiencing is a ground differential problem. Basically at least two of the pieces of equipment have a different ground reference. Make sure your equipment is properly grounded and that it is working properly from an electrical standpoint. If all looks well there you can always look at isolation transformers or a humbucker. Mike

Ed, if grounding doesn't help, you might consider replacing the batteries in the MiniDisc player. If THAT doesn't help, call me and I'll stop by and tinker with it until it works!

Did you try a different channel? That channel could be going bad on you... happens all the time.

Ed,
I would definitely advise following silverking's advice. It's suitably logical, necessarily methodical, and clear. It will almost certainly point you to the problem. Cheers from Toronto! Dan.
