How many times do you get paid to fool magicians? You get PAID to ENTERTAIN real people, not magicians.

Try to find Bill Goodwins lecture notes. If you can perform the material you will fool magicians.

Dude!!
How about trying to be entertaining? Screw fooling magicians. Your going to get your chance at that later on. You would be amazed at how badly you can fool a magician just by doing really obvious things along with a little presentation. Hard Core??? Try studying hard core. Your a Junior member so that means you still have a lot of learning to do. You also have that library downstairs in the castle.... get to reading some of the material in there.. As for learning hard core stuff. That will come with the studying. You also get lucky if your in the right place at the right time. Try hanging with magicians who just blow you away. You will pick things up eventually and they will start to share some of their methods with you. Most of the really crazy things I have learned have been from sessions with other magicians or I have just invented my own material that just kills em good. Read some Marlo, Vernon, Jennings and other legendary names... that's a great start towards fooling your magician buddies. |

All good and well but when it's that one Saturday of the month that you're getting together with your magic buddies, it's time to find some magician fooler material.
Try digging out some really old books and/or using some techniques that have fallen by the way side. Sometimes, with magicians, they are looking for such a complicated method that the simple one doesn't even dawn on them. Hate to admit it, but I got burned really badly once by a simple key card. Dang, I hate it when that happens.

My book, "Never Miss a Trick" contains a lot of stuff that your buddies have likely never seen. I think it's quite good--so do most of the folks who've bought it (well, two of the three!).

read some Marlo, Vernon, Jennings and other legendary names... that's a great start towards fooling your magician buddies. --------------------------------------------- How much did the above names work for lay audiences? I know Vernon did a bit early on, not sure about Jennings but from what I have seen of him on video I doubt it. I don't think that Marlo did at all did he? phillip |

I think your right. But that does not mean you can't take what they did and apply it towards your own style. Would it not be an advantage that these guys rarely did stuff. I never told this guy to go out and perform for lay audiences did I? He wants to fool magicians and I'm saying you don't have to use "underground" stuff to do it.
Where if ever, did Marlo perform? I never hear people talk about him at all. What is up with that? |

I saw a picture of Marlo performing with a huge crowd surrounding him. It looked like it was a formal event. I don't know if he performed regularly. I know that he was a fixture or a legend among magicians in Chicago. Is it true that the phrase "fast Eddie" comes from him because he had fast hands?

Actually, Jennings did perform a lot when he was younger. Even Bruce Cervon, who has NEVER truly gotten along with Larry if you know your history, quoted that Larry used to have the audiences eating out of the palm of his hands. Then as time went by, Larry just liked trying to fool other magicians. Because he was not a "professional" he didn't have to fool lay-people. It wasn't what he wanted to do and he was the first to admit it. His biggest thrills came from fooling other magicians. That, however, does not mean that his effects were not good for lay-people. Many of the tools that are used by close-up entertainers are invented by the ones who loom in the shadows so to speak. If you want some advice from a MASTER and PERFORMER, Mike Skinner, he said, "read everything".
Take care, Dorian Rhodell |

Some people wanting to "fool" other magicians, over look the idea of refining and making a simple move so good, that, that in itself, will fool a magician.
I once met this guy at a friends house who was a coin worker, and he was showing us some tricks of his and then he did a retention vanish. To this day it was the best retention vanish I've ever seen. Everyone in the room <all magicians> we're freaking out, because the timing was so perfect and the method so clean. He fooled us. We all know how he did it, but he fooled us. Sometimes the best things are right in front of you.

Marlo worked regularly as a magic bartender at one time and he also worked at a magic counter doing pitch magic.

I agree with all the people saying concentrate on entertaining! Not fooling.
Even in the magic cataloges now, "they say it fools any magician" and it turns out to be the worst effect ever! Matt |

I'm curious, Which would you rather do, fool magicians or impress them? They are not the same.
One is for children. Do you know which? Larry |
