What is a three letter word that is one syllable long, but if you add one letter it becomes a four letter word that is three syllables long?

Are there any such words?

I can give you a one-syllable word that gains
two syllables when you remove one letter. |

The only thing I could think of was this:
One 2one = twen-ty-one (3 syllables) But then again, 2 is not a letter.. hehe.. -Vinnie |

Good job JD. Anyone hazard a guess at stanalger's question?

My question was a sneaky way of giving the answer...
without being a(n obvious) spoiler. The answer is "Yes, there are such words. One such word is "are." I'll bet mrmystic caught it. Did anyone else realize that my first post gave the answer? I can't find "ide" in my on-line dictionary. I can find "ides" but no "ide." But then I can't find "ole" in my on-line dictionary either. But many of us are familiar with Rosemary Clooney's version of "This Ole House" and even more of us have heard of the Grand Ole Opry. Add an "o" to "ole" and you get "oleo," a 3-syllable word. There is a word that gains two syllables when you remove one letter. So this thread isn't dead just yet.... |

From wikipedia...
The ide or orfe (leuciscus idus) is a freshwater fish of the family Cyprinidae found across northern Europe and Asia. It occurs in larger rivers, ponds, and lakes, typically in schools. You could probably add... Ore Oreo It has earned enough usage to be a word. JD |

Still thinking about the other one.
Am reminded of this...what word turns out to be longer when you remove one letter? JD |

Good job, Opus.
One challenge remains. Find a one-syllable word which gains two syllables when you delete one letter. Would it help if I told you that after you delete the proper letter from the one-syllable word you get a three-syllable noun? Probably not. Stan |

But I'll bet it would help if I told you that
you could start with a one-syllable pronoun, delete a letter and finish with a three-syllable noun. Stan |

This one is a wee bit difficult.

But not too difficult for you, eh, lockedroomguy?
Congratulations and thanks for keeping in the spirit of things! Stan |

I never would have got it until you narrowed it down to pronouns. Nice puzzle, thanks!

I considered making this more bizarre/extreme,
but in the end decided that "Delete one letter to gain two syllables" made for a better puzzle than "Delete seven letters to gain two syllables." Agree? Disagree? |
