Is Bicycle the only brand to consider? I noticed at the dollar store today they sell 2 packs for $1. I picked them up, cant tell a difference yet. They might fall apart soon I'm sure.
Does the brand really matter? |

The brand does matter in a couple different ways:
-The quality of the cards and the feel are extremely important as a serious card worker. -The look of the backs will either help or hinder certain types of effects. A few brands are also more commonly known to laypeople, and this makes for more credibility instead of spectators wrongly jumping to the conclusion of "special" cards. Bicycles are pretty much accepted as the World Standard, or at least one of the most commonly used by serious card workers because of their quality and feel. Laypeople are used to seeing Bikes and thus these make for a perfect deck. Other standard brands are Tally-Ho and Bees. At some point it still comes down to a personal preference. Over time you will notice a significant difference between different brands, especially between Bikes/Bees and dollar store cards. |

The first pack of cards that I picked and played with was the cards that our family used to play Casino, Crazy Eights, Poker and Rummy. I grew up playing cards as this was what families did for entertainment back in '50s. My father was in the Navy and they used Bikes and Aviators, so we used the same cards. When I began to study magic in the '60s I didn't deviate, I used Bikes. Do yourself a favor, use the best quality cards and forget those 2 for a buck deals at the dollar store if you are serious, don't skimp on your tools. Also, do some experimenting with Tally Ho, Bee, Aviator, Hoyle & Stud brands (all are made by USPC). Bicycle rider backs are the standard and most people who perform use them exclusively.

It's been my experience that the backs don't matter except if the have a border or not depending what you want to do with them.
Do yourself a favor and try different backs. I personally prefer Tally Ho to Bicycles. But there are other brands.

The only time I will use these is for one part of my kid's show - I have three tricks in a row using the same signed card the kid keeps at the end. There are no sleights involved so I really don't have to worry about handling and manipulation, and I don't give away a card from an expensive deck. Ed |

Ah, the lowly STREAMLINE made by USPCC. Poker size, smooth finish, plastic coated...you can still find these at Big Lots and some of the other "discontinued and overstock" stores for $.99 a deck! Back in the day when I sessioned with Jim Molinari, Randy Wakeman, Glen Bishop and a few other guys (at the local Pizza Hut), these were Randy's preferred cards of choice. I still use them when I don't mind tossing them at the end of the evening.
FWIW Cheers!

I think bikes are probably the most commonly used by magicians.
That said, in the UK they are not as common, most decks are the sort that people pick up in pubs, and cheap shops. However, to be honest, the deck does not really matter to the spectator - all they are is a deck of cards, Use what makes you most comfortable, I think that is why so many magicians use bicycles - they have always used them. Some 'magicians' think that having a 'cool' brand of cards will make your magic more impressive - I am thinking along the lines of the Tiger decks. If this is the case, then there is something seriously wrong with your magic! To the spectator. they are just a deck of cards that they would play cards with. Nothing more. Simon |

For me it is all in the coating on the cards. I test them all with a thumb fan, if they spread nicely, I will use them. Bicycle, Bee, Tally-Ho, Aviator all have good coatings. Hoyle are the worst.

Yes you do! If you have a BJ's around you, they sell Bikes in packs of 12 (6 red and 6 blue) for $15, which is a hell of a deal.

I like tally hos If you can find them. Bikes are the standard. But you can use bee aviator and so on. Look on ebay. They sell lots of them cheap.
