Hi All,
Is an unexpanded shell supposed to cover the shaved insert completely? Thanx, jamie

It's supposed to cover the coin as much as possible, but there'll always be a minute gap.

My Schoolcraft unexpanded shell looks flawless when nested...

When my Schoolcraft is sitting flat on a hard surface with the [ in place, and you are looking closely, you can see a tiny sliver of the coin below. When it is in your hand, or on a close up mat you can't see a thing.
Most e[ that I have used only cover about 2/3 of the coin below so this is excellent.

I haven't had a shell yet, whether expanded or unexpanded, made from the top coin guys that covered the entire other coin. There is always a very very tiny section of the other coin exposed, but noone would ever notice.

The first expanded shell I bought was/is terrible. I really have to watch my angles because it only covers about half the edge of the insert when in place. Then I bought a Johnson and it works fine...there's a little edge left showing on the insert but it's really no problem. Then there's my Schoolcraft shell that's part of the Dean's set. Simply put: It rocks! I could put a nested coin in a spectator's hand and not worry too much about exposure. But then again, the Schoolcraft is pretty darn expensive. In reality I only use it in certain situations where I know I'll be over a carpeted floor or close-up mat. The shell I use most is the Johnson, and it actually came as part of their Hopping Halves set.

Every coin is *Approximately* the same thickness.
So if you completely bored out a coin leaving just the outside wall, then it would fit exactly around a shaved down coin, thickness-wise. Since you have the face/tail of the coin showing on the shell, that thickness is taken away from how it sits on the coin. The only way to get a shell to fit completely over a coin would be: 1: Making the shaved insert coin out of two coins that are both ground down a bit, resulting in a thinner coin 2: Taking the wall off the shell and glueing/welding/connecting a fake wall which is thicker onto the coin. 3: Some process where you expand the wall(kinda like expanding the coin), but I don't think this is currently possible. So no, a shell will never fit completely over a coin... |

I'm wondering if a shell that covers almost completely is dangerously thin on top.

I wouldn't worry about it covering the whole thing..but if it "blends" with the non-shell.

If it completely covered a regular coin, then when sat on the table it would be taller than a regular coin and so risk revealing itself.
It'd be like putting an English Penny next to a half dollar and not expecting folks to notice the coin is larger.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Does anyone happen to know why euro shells are so poor? Is it connected with the fact that the top two coin machinists don't work with bimetal coinage?

My Johnson Eisenhower E[ almost covers the coin, but I have to admit, the milling on the shell is awful. It is almost smooth...
To cover that, I usually limit the viewing angle to above the coins. The shell is usually not sitting still long enough for people to notice, anyway. To prove this, I have a friend who is not a magician, but is a collector of "trick coins" and is very familiar with E]'s, and has just about every one ever produced by Johnson (except the Eisenhower!). I laid out my four coins, and asked him if he could tell anything was different. He said, "If I look long enough, Doug, I can see the edge of one coin is different." He had NO idea it was a shell. Ah...satisfaction! Doug |

IMO, having that minute difference is a good thing. It makes de-shelling easier in some moves. I would not really bother about it going all the way down. Then again if there is a use for it being all the way down.... go for custom made gaffs. For as long as it works to your advantage. If it is just the look, then anything that would make us "unguilty" should do wonders to a performer. At least confidence wise.
