Properly-instructed students of Tae Kwon Do are taught to keep their hands up. As the video shows, not doing so can be pretty stupid as well as disrespectful. |

My vote goes to Yoshinkan Aikido.. Find a good Instructor though.. The Tokyo riot Police train in it..
Gracie Jiu Jitsu is great for close quarters fighting especially on your back.. Imo...

As with anything else, there are pure forms, and not so pure forms. The good and the bad. Traditional TKD is a fighting art. The more modern (commercial, money making, belt farms) are more flash and show.
In a REAL self-defense situation, any isolated spinning move is ill-advised (unless your opponent is stunned, and if that's the case, you shoule be leaving already). One of my instructors tought me a hard lesson when I turned my back on him once. In the video, imagine what would have happend if the kick had not landed so well (the kicker lost balance and ended up on the ground) and the opponent took advantage. What is the "best" martial art? No such thing. I've studied several styles that range from stand up punch and kick to grappling and ground fightning. My last school had guest instructors from other styles teach often and I think we were better for it. Just as an aside, a school that teaches you to "pull your punches" when sparring is doing more harm than good. Muscle memory is a powerful thing, and you don't want to be pulling punches in a real situation. The best training I did was with full body armor minus hand and foot pads. We hit full strenth, and knew it when we connected wrong (or right as the case may have been). |
