So it seems to me that 2006 brought us family show and kids magicians a slew of new tricks to choose from. (more than normal I'd say) If you had to pick one as the best of 2006 which would it be and why?
I know my vote but I want to hear others. Cam |

I think that for me it is a tie between "Bigger Wands" and "Off the Meter"... both get a great reaction

I have a split vote for mine. For pure quality of a prop and real precision manufacturing my vote has to go to Run Wolf Run, I have never seen this type of prop built to such a high standard.
And for pure "WOW" factor and for the look on the kids faces when you produce a 7ft wand I will also put a vote to Bigger Wands. |

Its interesting that most of the suggestions so far are either not actually magic (e.g. bigger wands) or are not particularly amazing magic (e.g. off the meter).
Both of my examples are great props (I use off the meter all the time) but they fall short of being amazingly magical! |

I agree Nick.
Best new kids trick of 2006?...there wasn't for me. There were some nice new "facings" for old tricks, but nothing much new. Unless I'm forgetting something. I have bought less this year than the past 5 years. I think that's a good thing? |

In a way, Smoke and Mirrors, I agree with you and also with Nick although I have spent more on magic this year then ever in the past 15 years.
I have purchased bigger wands and more puppets from Axtell, a ton of props from Hocus Pocus and Denny&Lee and also from Wolfs magic and an illusion from Dream-illusions. All this to produce one new family stage show. So even though I am slightly off topic, I must admit that with all my expense, there were NO NEW kids tricks on my list. the only NEW item was the Bigger Wands that gets my thumbs up and I am using it in conjunction with an OLD trick/gag - Quentin Reynolds 5 minutes with a pocket handkercheif. (I just get the kid to make the mouse disappear in a change bag with wands up to 5 ft. the seven foot wand produces a 'prize' from the same bag). enjoy, Dani |

Actually, it is closer to $5000 dollars.
what can I say, I am a good customer that is the price of production. I don't say I will use everything I bought and I don't say everything I use will be used in that one new family show. but I did go on a particularly large shopping spree this year for new and old material in order to continue in my quest of continued marketing of my old and new shows to various markets. I have another show to produce on my agenda as I type this. this will be my ultimate goal for the century and if I manage to pull it off - it should cost me in the region of $20,000 before marketing, sales and other costs. It would also entail hiring a professional team of assistants/dancers/stage hands etc. but this is for the future. I produced a brand new show last year which proved very successful and I feel, that instead of waisting my profits away on other things, it would be a good idea to invest in another magic production. this time (for the first time) I have invested the money on items that I beleive will prove very successful with slightly older audiences. So, I have purchased both new stuff on the market and old stuff aswell and as I mentioned - I can not point out a single 'best trick of 2006' but rather be happy with what I have done over the year with what I have, and what I have intention to do with all the stuff that I purchased this year. For creativity - my vote goes to Creative magic For workmanship - my vote goes to Dream illusions for customer service - my vote goes to Denny&Lee for availability - my vote goes to Hocus Pocus magic For future excitement - my vote goes to Axtell Expressions Enjoy, Dani p.s I will not be spending this much money next year so please don't bug me if you are a magic dealer |

2006 isn't over yet. If I can finish the write up and the photos before December 31st, I will submit for your consideration my NEW effect (old for me but new to the rest of you) the Invisible Candy/Cookie Jar. Look for it in my Dollar Store Magic bin. The effect- You show a clear plastic jar, about the size of a cookie jar. Nothing inside. You ask various kids to reach inside and you can control whether the kid receives a piece of candy or not. If you decide to give them candy, they will find a piece of candy appears in the jar. Otherwise, it stays empty. As a finale, you show a large clear plastic bowl and from the Candy Jar you begin dumping candy out until the bowl is overflowing. Then you can pass out the candy to the audience if you wish.
It doesn't have to be candy. You could do the same with any small candy-sized or cookie sized items, like super balls, dice, stuff that is used as give-aways at Halloween time or in carnivals, etc. They appear or not under your control in the large cookie jar, and later flow into and fill up a clear bowl. New trick, new principles at work! The only question, will I finish it before the end of 2006?

Hmmm maybe we should compile a list of all the new stuff from 2006, that may help.
It's true not everything is a trick so lets say best new addition to your kids show. Prop, routine, effect, what was the best purchase of 2006. And I think we should share why, was it a great price? was it good quality? have you discovered something that you wished you had 10 years ago? I think if we establish what we like most and why, It will help the dealers give us more of the stuff we like! Cam |
