I need advice on springing the cards, I cannot get them in one fluid motion. They always sputter like "bupp, bupp, bupp!" It is really getting on my nerves, so any advice on how to get more fluidity to the spring? Thanks!

Just let them go. I noticed when I first started, I was afraid the cards would fly everywhere. I stopped worrying and It worked for me.

Try thumb/pinky like suggested on XB.
I use that grip and I think it gives more control. experiment. try different grips, see what works best for you. -Matt

I don't know what that is. FYI: I'm using the Royal Road to card magic for reference |

Hmmm... I may be in the minority here, but do try springing the cards off of your thumb instead of the fingers. I find that it is a much more natural angle for my arms. If others spring from the thumb, sorry. I've only seen a few sources, and they've all springed from the fingers.

I'm actually getting better as the days progress. I mean, today, one of my non-magician friends, Zach, told me to bring my fingers towards my body. Now I can do it about 6 inches, but my main goal is to do it about 3-4 feet!
Thanks for the advice guys! |

3-4 feet? I would venture that's a world record, if not close. I believe a foot and a half is sufficient to impress any laymen.

Try the corner grip, because it gives you more control. J |

I don't have a pinky, and have been trying to learn this for some time, my main problem, is control, the cards spring, but the spring to fast, and not in a straight line. Has anyone got any advie on what I amy be doing wrong?

Don't have a pinky ? All right. Your problem seems to be uneven pressure on the breadth of the cards. If the right side of the packet is squeezed more than the left side, then the cards will not fly out to the left, and visa versa. And the speed can be controlled by how you release the cards. I would try with an older deck, which has lost most of the stiffness, which would help you control the rate of flow.

I can do the spring pretty well. I got some tips from Jerry's Encyclopedia; if you don't have it, shame on you.
I tried the pinky grip, but my hands are pretty small, and so I have substituted the ring finger for the pinky. Also, I have found my spring is dependent on the cards. My spring sucks with a new deck of cards, but after a deck has been broken in, I can get around 3 feet or so. If my arms were longer, I imagine that I could get 4 feet. Keep practicing. K.C. |

The springing phenomena continues to puzzle me as well. I'll rant for a while about it here instead of opening yet another card springing thread.
Of all the people I have seen do and even explain this, no one has adressed in detail if the cards really spring equally off from both sides of the deck. Let me try to clarify that... I do the corner to corner way, using my thumb on one corner and the middle and ring finger on either side of the other. It is a nice relaxed grip and the cards seem to spring slower when doing it from the corners as opposed to the sides. I don't use the pinky since... that is impossible. Also I have had a bit of experience with finger injury do to wear and I do not believe it is good for your hands to use a weak finger like that for something like this. Now then... my cards seem to spring from the thumb mostly. I suspect that they just follow off the other fingers. In air, they are heading a little towards me, but not a great deal. If I try to make an effort to make the cards spring equally from my other fingers, they overshoot my hand since the difference between the injogged and outjogged landing is too great. Did that make sence? So you might say... if it works don't fix it. Well. Yes, but I remember seeing a trick which required springing the cards as an opener to sort of in and out jog them evenly as a setup for something else. Like a half completed Faro almost. Of course I cannot remember now what it was or where I saw it, but I am still worried that maybe I shouldn't be doing my springing this way if it excludes me from learning more advanced stuff later. ?
