Yes. I know this topic has been covered ad infinitum. And this will HOPEFULLY be the last time it needs to be addressed:
I emailed Mya Angel ages ago (sorry, been swamped) and offered to do what another member had done in another message board: collect a chunk of beginner stuff and she'll post it as a STICKY so it stays on top of the board. So here's what I plan on adding, and I'd love suggestions over the next few days, at which point I'll compile it all and forward it to her. That way it's a permanent fixture and we can all go address heavier subjects, like... uh... hmmmm. Anyway. Here's the start of the list: General Magic: Books Mark Wilson's cyclopedia of magic Magic for dummies DVDs/Videos: Are there any videos in this genre? I've got plenty on cards, but whatabout for total novices in a generic manner? CARDS: Books: Royal Road to card magic Card College (vols 1-4) DVDs/Videos Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights - Vol 1-8 (available on DVD/video) Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles - Vols 1-3 (dvd/video) Coins: Bobo's modern coin magic (book) Mentalism This is an area which I am very unfamliliar with, so the following comes from a very helpful exchange with the Café's own Paul Alberstat (the following are his comments, not mine... this is way out of my field of expertise). 13 Steps to Mentalism - READ, do NOT skim Bob Cassidy's "Principia Mentalia" series (there are 4 in the set) are very useful in learning some effects BUT more importantly the psychology and principles behind the successful performance of mentalism. I highly recommend both those books of his and both his "Art of Mentalism" both 1 and 2. Paul's own book: "Can You Keep a Secret?" which has such chapters as "Mentalism 101" If you want some "mental magic" to go with all that, then my highest recommendation goes to Larry Becker's "Stunners Plus" (if you order it, please tell him I sent you) but for the money oyu are getting a book with 100% useable and workable mental magic (I use many of Larry's ideas in my own show) and for the value, it is worth 10 times that much. :magicrabbit: So that's where I am going to start the list. This is compiled from many posts where I've seen the same titles come up over and over. If anyone feels that something crucial is missing, please post it here and I'll send the final list to Mya to officially stickify. |

You should add Real Magic by Jay Sankey to the video section. It's great for true beginners and covers a wide array of illusions.

With regards to the Mark Wilson book.
There are 2 versions I think of the Mark Wilson Encyclopedia of Magic. There is a condensed version, and a full version. I have both, and will check the ISBN numbers. |

I will add a couple of books/videos that seem to have their share of fans under the listed topics:
General Magic Books: The Amateur Magicians Handbook - Henry Hay The Magic Book - Harry Lorayne General Magic DVD's/Videos: Tough to find a single video on general magic. IMO, a high quality, reasonably priced, introductory level series of tapes would be Secret Seminars of Magic with Patrick Page. |

Coins:
Bobo's modern coin magic (book) Make sure it is the hardback edition; it has 4 more chapters than the paperback and worth the price. |

Video/DVD
Michael Ammar's Exciting World of Magic A good overview of magic, basic tricks, and good advice. |

If you want to learn some cool flourishes like one hand fans and color changes Jeff McBride's The Art of Card Manipulation series is great, but some of the stuff is hard to get if you have smaller hands.

The "problem" with these threads as they always start out as a small list of essentials, and by the time everyone finsihes adding *their* essentials you'd need to be a millionaire to even get started .
A beginner (like me) is then forced to read everyone's essentials lists and note which text and videos are mentioned most often before purchasing. If would be nice to have some sort of ranking or poll along the lines of "145 people recommend RRTCM" or something to that effect. Of course, it'd be a ton of work, so I don't see that happening too soon. Hey, I can dream . |

My two cents worth.
Make Mark wilsons book the first thing a beginner has to buy and once he has read thru it then move on to a secondary list that specializes in coins or mental magic or cards or whatever. Do I get a penny for my thoughts? |

I would add:
Expert Card Technique to the cards section. It's the follow-up book for the Royal Road to Card Magic. Sort of like RRTCM Volume 2. Also, where can I get the HB version of Bobo's Modern Coin Magic? I've only seen the paperback. Regards, Eric
