In his early years David Copperfield did some really great manipulation.

Who was the greatest ever? IMO Cardini. Who is? Currently, I'd say Lance or Jeff. As sethman said, DC is an amazing manipulator as well (first few TV specials late 70s/early 80s) but never performs this kind of act publicly any more.

Cardini,
In the video I've seen of him,he displays a naturalness and ease that is not seen as often as it sould be in manipulation.Manipulators as a whole ,in my opnion, demonstrate a lack of natural movement and in turn decrease the deceptiveness of manipulation.(I say this as a manipulator myself)

Its hard to say but I like how good cardini was but don't like the being fooled by his own magic bit. On the other side of that I don't think jeff is as good as cardini yet but I prefer his style

The fooled by his own magic is really talking more about character. cardini realized at an early age that manipulative magic does not always have to be a show of mere skill alone. He realized he could give something more to his audiences besides that of skill by creating a character and a plot that this character goes through. Because he did it this way, the routine was more enjoyable for audiences to watch.

Yeah I understand completely what your saying and I do also do believe that it is entertaining. I just personally for myself when I am performing I believe in the persona of the magician creating the magic rather than the props. This is not in any way a disrespect to anyone espescially cardini. I just prefer jeffs style. mind you I still believe that cardini is the best manipulator of all time.#

I don't know topas' work I'm curious.
feel ashamed I didn't mention charlie frye.....he's....well words don't do justice...he's amazing. my show is based on, "the magic fooling me", to take the intimidation off the audience [i'm a street performer]....but I realize everyones taste for magic is different, has to be....but samr1990 made the observation I believe correctly especially after I went back and watched McBrides work again and again, after reading the posts here about McBride. McBride has an exciting show, spectacular really, but manipulation better then cardini? respectfully I don't think his work has reflected that nor do I think that's is what has made him great in his own right. futher, nor do I claim to be half the performer McBride is but devoting my whole life and livelyhood to parlor and stage manip and basing a street show working surrounded....and well knowing how hard this art is....cardini. after watching and reading instruction from all the sources we have at hand to us and reading just how the heck cardini did it and how he learned it, I hafta say...cardini. thanks samr1990 and magic4u02, really, I was feeling crazy before y'all posted. your both brillant. |

Great discussion but let us dive in deeper and start talking about what makes you personally see someone as a great manipulator in magic? What is it that they do or convey on stage that makes them so wonderful and in a class all by themselves?
Is it their skill alone or is there and can there be so much more? Are there manipulators in this modern time that are taking the manipulative arts to new levels and creating something more unique? If so who are these and how would you personally define the qualities of the New Age Manipulator? I think this could be a good discussion and a continuation of what we are talking about already. We can also learn from what we share. Kyle

Very good Point Kyle.
I agree with you to make a deeper discussion. Topas is man of art and ideas. He has many interesting things in his Manipulation Act, witch he has performed in World's Greatest Magic. The Idea with magic wand was amazing + sunglasses routine. My opinion he is reprisenting the modern magic. But this is only my opinion. |

If you ever saw his full show you would come to realize even how much more creative he really is. That is one thing I admire about Topas as a mondern manipulator. He not only manipulates the common objects of magic but he also has taken into new areas. His "Time in a bottle" manip routine is a thing of beauty and is so creative in the items he uses, his character on stage the the story being told through magic and music.
He even does a sequence in the show that is purely manipulation of sound. very creative thinker and someone NOT afraid to think outside of the box. Someone who is willing to break down the walls of manipulative magic and a person who looks outward away from magic for ideas. There are many others and I will bring them up as we go along. I just wanted to get a more deeper discussion going based on the questions I posed above. Kyle
