Thanks Olivertwist and ChrisJ for your PM's great ideas guys and will start working on it.

Here's a short clip...the shirt is not the one for the figure. Just borrowed this one from my son... I had it tailormade and it will take a few more weeks... will post a new clip as soon as the new costume is ready Smile

I'm also planning to trade this figure...but if the ideas start coming, I might just stick with it Smile

Thanks everyone Smile

Hi Wanlu. I carved it not from basswood but from Jelutope, a soft white wood I got from our province here in the Philippines. Yes it's soft like basswood, but very strong and durable. Robert McCray of the Big Head fame also uses Jelutope wood for some of his fantastic hard figures. He said he imports this wood from the Philippines. We don't have basswood here, I believe and please correct me if I'm wrong, in our country.

It's the second hard figure I created from wood, the traditional vent figure material: no molds, no duplicates, 100% custom-made, so it's the ONLY ONE in the world.

The big head style is a sort of tribute to one of my favorite figure-makers, Robert McCray. I purposely made the paint job a little crude, or childish, if you wish, because it created the character I wanted. I opted it not to have a "perfect" or "flawless" paint job because I didn't want it to look like a China doll. It's a "cartoon" figure! And I imagine that its design was drawn by an 8 year-old kid!

I've handled resin-type Selberg, Detweiler, Lovik figures... they are great. But no one beats IMHO the feel of a real wood figure. That's why I'm a great fan of Conrad Hartz, and, of course--the best of them all, the Macks and Frank Marshall.

I'm planning to create more figures of this type next year... because I'm enjoying the art of hard figure-making each time I finished one.

Anybody there interested to have their own custom-made, super-unique hard figures, just PM me and let's see if I can be of help to you.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks Ony...I like the figure a lot...he's now known as Professor Ony or just plain The Professor Smile Of course when I intro him it's going to be Professor Ony named after his creator Mr Ony Carcamo...but during the discussion, I'll adress him as Professor Smile

Yup he is Jelutope wood...I stand corrected Smile

I got good comments regarding your figure specially here in the Magic Café...I plan to use him early next year Smile BTW, Im also checking possibilities of trading him...don't worry, I wont trade it with a lousy figure Smile

Thanks much...owe you big time Smile

Cool figure. I was given a hard figure puppet earlier this year.(through the will of a local ventriloquist).

Playing around with him helped me develop a voice and the start of a routine.

Finding his character and type was the first step. Clothes would also help determine the mood and dialogue. To be honest because of the weight of John, he doesn't get out as much as Nigel and the other nearly normal puppets. John is a size 7 figure and weighs a lot more than the puppets I have been using for the last 25 or so years. A picture of John is included in the link to Yahoo Photo Album

Great figure!

Did you know though that McRay does not carve figures anymore? He direct-sculpts over a clay undersculpture with the two part epoxy magicsculp. I believe once the shell is pulled he may back it with some fibreglass mesh for more strength and durability. This gives him the freedom to create a one of a kind figure, without the limitations put on him by wood ---- thus continual refinements can easily be made until the figure is ready for a paint job. Robert gives an example of how he accomplishes this on his site and it is very interesting to review.

Hi...Ony Carcamo recently recarved and transformed the Professor to an Old Man...I like him a lot better than the former image. He now has raising eyebrows and gray hair Smile

Lolo Oban (88 yrs old) had his first two performances last weekend and will be seen in action again this weekend.

Pictures and videos SOON Smile
