Hey Daegs,
Um, well it's not so much an ability. There are ways to know what they make of something, some instances occur more frequently than others. Basically what I meant was, if you asked a spec what piece of magic he just saw, in either of the two routines, he would say 'the selected card was over there and it instantly jumped to between these two cards'. It looks/plays exactly the same as far as the audience is concerned. As far as spectator thoughts are concerned, Darwin Ortiz' Strong Magic and now, Designing Miracles are both very good - the latter is advertised as "a groundbreaking study into how spectators think and what it takes to amaze them" (as regards the magical effect)'. In many cases, comments/questions/feedback/exclamations which they make in front of you (TO you) can be very insightful - eg, 'but I was holding onto it the WHOLE time!', 'and your sleeves are rolled-up as well!', 'I was looking so hard and you didn't touch it at all'. In other words, conditions which the specs think really make the effect impossible are the ones we want to amplify as much as possible, not the ones WE think are important. Another interesting occurrence which doesn't happen as frequently but is arguably even more valuable is when one spec recalls to his friend who wasn't present during the trick (within your earshot) what you just did. This is an account of exactly what he thinks he saw; essentially it's insight into their mind/memory of the trick. Again, the information they emphasise is what needs to be played up, always. In response to your inquiry therefore, sorry, can't give any shortcuts/amazing ability, but you can always listen to what they feel compelled to say, or even ask them what they think (if appropriate). Hope this helps? Let me know! By the way, (if you are familiar with both versions of the trick in question - Jean-Pierre Vallarino's and David Regal's), do you think the spectator would discern real differences in the trick? Or would they remember (see) the same action? Cheers, Chris |

Ok, I probably should have laid on the sarcasm a little thicker upon re-reading my post.
I'm just a little weary about online magicians telling other magicians exactly what is going on in *all* spectators minds with no wiggle room. You stated "there is *no* difference between the two versions" By all means find out what works for you, but not all effects that have the same outward effect(card to envelope, ambitious card, etc) have the same impact and meaning on a spectator.... to just state both are exactly the same is doing a disservice to both the creators imho, both have their good points, but I don't think they are exactly the same. Now depending on the situation, it might not be much of a difference, but yes I think in a formal situation with full attention of the audience both effects would register differently on a spectator. |
