I am new to magic, but not new to performing. As I train and practice this new art, I've come up with a question I would like to discuss. How much attention should be focused on actual skill, and how much on performance and character?
In the industry I come from, it seems to be the more performance based talents who get the opportunities and make the money; while the credible "Workers" as we call them, tend to play for the respect and credibililty of the diehard crowd of insiders, while at the same time neglecting the mainstream audience. So in terms of training, how much time should be focused on Performance /in ratio to/ Skill |

Bob,
I suspect fabian accidentally left-clicked in the middle of typing "RATIO performance 2 skill" My feeling is that "performance" is as much a skill as any other part of Magic.
Woke up.

Bob, I wrote that as one of those little word puzzles... The word performance is in the word ratio... Performance in Ratio 2 skill.

Wouldn't it be better to say Presentation 2 Skill ratio?
Don't Skill and presentation add up to Performance? The time you put into working on a character depends on how different from yourself that character is. One magician may perform for children, another for adults, some do comedy or busking and others bizarre and mental magic. Some characters are extreme but not all. Entertaining your target audience is essential. |

Looking at the extremes: Push button magic can be very entertaining when done by a great performer. The world's greatest manipulator is meaningless without presentation skills.
