When you are talking about adult shows, I'm going to assume you mean for an audience of adults - NOT XXX shows!

Okay, I'm kidding, but once I was hired for a fireman's convention and my show was billed as adult entertainment. The previous year they had hired a stripper, but had a number of complaints from the wives, so they booked me for that year. Unfortunately they still billed it as an adult show. The beer truck in the parking lot was flowing all day and by my 9:00 PM show they were primed and expecting something other than what I was prepared to deliver. Oh, if we could only sell our experience for what it cost us!

Anyway, your road block begins with the realization that an adult show is not a market. It's a description of an audience. The markets for adult shows include corporate events, association events, colleges, trade shows, civic organizations hosting banquets, comedy clubs etc.

There is no best way to market for adult shows as each market will require a different marketing strategy. They usually book several months in advance to the event(although I've noticed that lead times particularly for corporate events have shrunken over the past couple of years). They may or may not use the services of a professional meeting planner or booking agent to find appropriate entertainment for an event.

It also depends upon where you are in your career and where you want to go.

Do you have a solid 30-45 minute club act for adults that can play anywhere, be seen and enjoyed by several hundred people and travels easily? Have you broken in and polished your act locally for civic organizations before approaching corporate and association meeting planners or booking agents and event planners?

Finally, do you have professional promotional materials including a great demo video targeted to the meeting industry marketplace and showing you entertaining adults?

That's where I would start.

I second that. I rarely comment in this section, but Jim, you are the man! Anyway, Flourish Dude, if you want "adult shows" go for corporate audiences, assuming you have a good act that is solid and can perform for an hour or so without boring anyone or you'll have a tough time in that market. If you've never done any "adult" type shows then do yourself a favor and do what I did when I had no money but wanted to learn everything I could about marketing...go to the local book store and spend a day and read every book they have about business, how to market, etc. Start with Gurilla (I know I spelled that wrong) Marketing and move down the shelf. You need to understand what clients want from you, and no it isn't to see your cool card tricks that impresses your card buddies! They are looking for entertainment, a good time, etc. If you've never done any shows for "adult" audiences, take an ad out in the newspaper or even on gigmasters.com or partypop.com or any other of those types of web sites. I'll be the first to admit it, but I was ashamed of going to those sites, but when I started out, it was one of my few options. But, think about it, you have people already interested in your services contacting you. What more could you ask for?

Jim,

Your comment about adult versus XXX shows struck home with me.

Several years ago the terms "No blue material" was purposefully easy to spot on my commercial website. You guessed it! Google ONLY picked up "Blue Material".

It did make life exciting for a while. It took nearly a year for the reference to go away after I changed the copy.

I knew a guy who met a man who knew a guy, etc., who worked swingers parties (doing magic tricks).

has anyone here ever done that, or is this story just hot air?
