Thanks folks,
Usually I was only doing restaurant work on the weekends but I've been working tables about 5 nights a week for the past month now, so I've had quite my share of these stonemen, which is why I posted this in the first place. Last night I had a group of women who were giving me the stone lady treatment, as well as a couple where the guy was giving me the treatment. I've come up with a nice line that while is at the persons expense seems to work very well for me (great tips from both tables). My personality compliments some mild making fun of audience members. So thanks to all.

I've encountered "Mr. Pokerface" at many a party where I've been asked to "do a few tricks"...
I will usually just ignore him, and focus on interested spectators. Running into this more often than I would like, I finally just plain asked him if he likes magic. Almost every time, I find this person does NOT like magic, or people who entertain by deception. These people generally do not like comedians either. Sometimes if the person is with a group, and I notice rolling eyes, or just not impressed...I'll directly apologize..."...hey, Jack's not impressed...sorry Jack...bear with me, if you would...I'll be done in a moment!" Jack suddenly has a new attitude...it doesn't always work...but it's the least painful, anyway. Another thing I found...sometimes Mr. Stone Man just doesn't like the MAGICIAN!! LOL! Doug |

When your young you want to "turn" them and make them show their enjoyment. Later in life after thousands of performances, you relize they don't matter. Play to the folks that are enjoying it. and then move to the enxt table.

Ok here we go again. I am about to get in trouble.
WHO CARES? Don't you guys understand that NOT EVERYONE LIKES MAGIC? Why is he required to respond in the fashion in which YOU dictate? The simple fact is that he may very well be the guy at the table who is making sure EVERYONE ELSE HAS FUN. Watch them closely. They are usually making sure everyone is laughing. I don't get this. People enjoy themselvs in different ways. Just because they are not laughing out loud. Get over youselvs. Also try having an audience of 400 people at a comedy club. Believe it or not NOT EVERYONE LAUGHS. I am just shocked that we think everyone has to act in a certain way. If that was the case everyone would be a performer. Ever consider maybe it is the show? Ouch yea sometimes that is the case. Maybe you only appeal to the "lowest common denomenator". Guess what, THAT IS WHAT GOOD ENTERTAINMENT IS. There are people who turn off Sinatra and say he sucks! So what? I am ranting, but really how is an audience member required to be involved in some sort of contract that requires a certain reaction? It is crazy! Oh and one more reason to NOT throw lines at them is sometimes THAT is where future bookings and big tips come from. IF the guy is really just a jerk, let him be. If he is not bothering you then why bother him? He may not be enjoying, but he is not bothering you. Start throwing lines and you get what you deserve. Sorry rant over go back to discussing and ignore me.

It's true, everyone doesn't like magic, which is why I ask if they want to see magic before I start, I even assure them that it's okay to say no, after that however, I'm a performer in a theme restaurant, which last I heard was a place to go and have fun. The stone man thing doesn't bothere me anymore, I've learned how to get around it by invlolving the person and such. It is rude, however to stare at someone like they've just killed your grandmother after they've just performed for you at your request, even if the act wasn't to your liking.

That reminds me of something that I saw a few weeks ago. I was at another theme restaurant with my girlfriend, Jekyll and Hydes, which is sort of a horror with a campy twist type restaurant. My girlfriend and I are sitting down and these two guys come in and sit. There's an actor going around with a thick spanish accent dressed as Don Juan DeMarco. So he goes up to us and startes making some jokes and such and then he wanders up to these guys and they completely ignore him, like he's not even there. This guy's been hired to walk around and joke with people in a theme restaurant where this is expected to happen. Heck, it happens even before you walk in to the restaurant outside, so people know what they're getting into once they walk in. If you want to just eat and leave then go somewhere else, but don't go to a theme restaurant and act like someone's bothering you for talking to you in character. Ok, now I'm done with my rant.

A famous MC once had a fellow in the front row that refused to clap. It was burning him up.
He finally singled the fellow out. The fellow then showed he had no hands. Christopher

From my experience it seems like about 10% of any given audience doesn't care for magic. Maybe it makes them feel stupid. Maybe they have had negative experiences in the past. They think magic is just for kids, whatever. . . I've also found about 10%-15% of any given audience only want to find out how its done. They want you to repeat the trick so they can spot the move etc. I've done shows for Microsoft and the engineer types are all like that. They want to figure it out. The other 75% -80% percent will just laugh and enjoy the show. I'm curious. Would other performers agree with these percentages???

No. I wouldn't agree with the percentages at all. When performing for real people in real places, you never know who or what kind of people your audience will consist of. It often time varies, and a different performer can get different reactions. It all depends on your style, and how you present the magic.
