I'm trying to get to grips with two of the rope through neck effects in the Encylopedia of Rope Magic but am still at the stage of strangling myself gently. The two are "Endless Neck Rope" (p345) and "New Rope Through Neck" (p311). I'm still waiting for that lightbulb moment when it all makes sense but are these two effects really the same?

You know, I think there's a misprint on p311. The X is in the wrong place. It should be on the other side of the cross, nearer the neck. No wonder I was strangling myself. Anyone care to see if I'm right?

I know I'm changing the subject, but what the **** is wrong with the one on page 310 it is simple to understand, and I get big applause when I do it. Those other two are dufficult to do, and impossible for an audience to understand. I am going to go to the Daryl DVD to see how he does the ones you are asking about.

Now that I've mastered the loop one, I think I agree the Tenkai one is better. But I don't think the loop one is impossible for an audience to understand. I was thinking it might be possible to combine them as phases of a longer routine.

Jim Gerrish shows a rope routine that he used to teach The Wiz Kids that is now available in a DVD on my site ("The Wiz Kids Present: Rope Magic") in which he begins the routine with a U.F. Grant Rope Through Neck, seques to the Tenkai Rope Through Neck, and then on to the Blok Kord and others. You can combine the effects into a solid routine, or present each one separately

They both look to me to be the same trick, or at least very very similar. Daryl calls this trick "the priest's pearls". They do not look very convincing to me. If I were you I would stick with the Tenkai's rope through the neck page 310, or the instant rope through neck. Both rope encyclopedias leave much to be desired.

Thanks. I'll keep experimenting for a bit. The advantage of the Tenkai one is that the rope around the neck is under (slight) tension. With the other ones it's hard to get that.

U.F. Grant's Rope Through Neck is not included in the Stewart James Encyclopedia, but was included in one of his filmed lectures.

Thanks, Al. I don't have the Daryl yet.
I think there's promise in Spellbinder's idea of a routine based on a series of penetrations, perhaps using a Sefalajia-style box, maybe ending up with one of the better rope through body routines.

I remember a version where the rope was draped around the neck and then kind of doubled around and just pulled through. Pretty sure it was in one of those beginner type books.
Anyone know where this might be found? |

Tarbell volume #1, page 334, has a rope through the neck called "The Prisoner's Escape or Hanging Oneself With Rope". This is not the thread version but is a one hand twist of the ropes. Not sure but this might also work with a small chain through the neck.

Check out "Zip", I think that is what it is called, on Ron Dayton's "Hung Up On Ropes" dvd.
It is very straightforward to get into and very convincing. |

I will throw in a couple ideas I think improve my magnetic rope through neck I wear a big hat and slowly put rope over hat & head ( to me this wakes up everyone to whats happening. Then to give me a bit of time I say for this trick to work both ends must be even which is closer to floor ??
