Hi All,
I am putting together a bill to impossible location for my act. However, I am not in a position where Flash Paper is readily available to me and I don't think the theater would appreciate me lighting up envelopes. I would like to destroy or vanish the bills. Does anybody here have any alternatives to lighting the bill on fire? Does vanishing the bills get as much of a reaction as destroying them? Thanks for any help! -=Chris |

I put the bill into an envelope then rip it up. I don't know of a specific reference for this but there are a couple ways of doing this. With a TT you can vanish/destroy a bill in many ways.

To me bill To impossible location and destroyed and restored bill are really two different effects. With the right presentation that combination is fine.
The strength of the impossible location routine depends on the presentation, how you do the vanish and where the bill ends up after the vanish. Spectators pocket, in a roll of Lifesavers, in a cigarette, etc, etc. How many ways can you destroy a bill? Fire, torn or cut to shreds, eat it, flush it?? |

I like the paper shredder idea if you cannot burn it.

How about loading bill confetti into a money maker? When you load the whole bill in one side the confetti comes out the other. Sort of a portable, tableside shredder. I can't remember where I saw this idea for the first time (certainly not original).

You might want to try Richard Sanders #3 Volume DVD. The magicians gives the spectator an unopened pack of Trident gum to hold. He takes a spectator's bill and rips off the corner. The spectator holds the corner. The bill vanishes from the magician's hand. When the spectator opens the pack of Trident gum, he/she will notice a dollar bill folded up in a Trident gum wrapper. The spectator unfolds the bill and noticed the pevious torn corner matches the bill identically.

If you're working with Cyril, you can throw the bill into an aquarium filled with piranhas.

The shredder idea is great and you can buy small ones really cheap now, I bet you can even get a battery operated one, But check out the "Ring Cruncher from Collectors Workshop and use a real shredded one dollar bill in the gaff, I bet you'll love this utility item, I have used it for years and it' is great.

The bill in Lemon routine I perform (based on Scott Alexander's Final Answer) has a portion where a spectator is selecting two out of three coin envelopes for me to destroy. One of the envelopes is supposed to contain their borrowed bill.
I use THIS battery powered hand held shredder to destroy the two envelopes. I got it at the local Wal-Mart. It is just strong enough to to shred a small coin envelope with a once folded piece of paper inside. Anything thicker than that will not shred well. I have a piece of paper that is money colored inside the envelopes. Since it is a strip shredder, I shred almost to the end, then I reverse it back out and ask the spectator if they are sure they did not want to change their mind. It's a joke since its already been shredded, but what it does is let me to put the envelope back into the shredder rotated 90 degrees to effectively create a cross shred. Little squares of paper come tumbling out of the shredder. HERE is an excerpt from a performance when I used it. The reaction right at the end is to the little greenish yellow squares falling out of the shredder that looks like money. After that clip, I turn over the newspaper to hide the shredded pieces so they don't get TOO good of a look. |

As far as the magic is concerned burning, vaporising or even vanishing the bill has the effect of 'saying', 'the bill ceases to exist'.
Shredding, or tearing up the bill does not have this element. The bill is still there it's just that it's in pieces. In theory at least the specky is then left at the end of the effect with unresolved questions regarding the remaines of ripped up bill. Was it ripped up and rematerialized? Was it sneaked out the envelope and never ripped up? Are there now two versions of the bill.. the ripped up one and it's clone the discovered one? I say in theory because in practice a routine like this is normally done with an emphisis on a comedy presentaion and this should have the effect of moving the effect along and putting your audience in a frame of mind that lets these points wash over them as they enjoy (hopefully) the entertainment. Just thought I mention it out of interest though. Neal (PS really liked the handheld shredder Dan)

I would think vanishing the bill would get a better reaction. If you vanish it, they will think you teleported it to the 'impossible location'. If you destroy it, they'll think there is a double of some sort.
The only exception would be if they signed the bill, you destroyed it then it appeared in another location. You would get the BEST reaction that way as long as you practiced and perfected your performance to make it seem very natural, so the audience can't suspect anything. As for destroying it, just get a small paper shredder like everyone else said.

Eric Evans has notes with a bill vanish (and destruction from audience point of view)that is simple and doesn't use flames. Basically it looks like a liquid interacts with the bill and vaporizes the bill. I have not used it in performance yet, but I have practised and obtained all the props needed. I will likely use fire but will use this method for times when tht is not possible.

If on stage, a flash bill can work if the area requires fire.
I like the paper shredder idea, Dan. Do use mind if I try it? |
