I have a Rocky, but I call him Ricky. My favorite thing to do with Ricky is a little risque, but it is very funny. I palm a brown peanut M&M in my left hand and bring Ricky out. When he finally notices the audience he gets nervous and I let the brown M&M fallout as if he just dropped a turd. I then eat the M&M while apoligizing for Ricky. You have to use the peanut M&M because they are bigger than the plain chocolate kind. Feel free to use any suitable chocolate confection
I believe I created this line but if someone can prove me wrong I would be glad to share the credit. Feel free to use this line if you like it, just be careful of who you are playing for!

Hi Rick (& Ricky),
Similair has been done I'm afraid. You can also get him to "eat" the M&M beforehand with a move akin to a striking vanish before it makes its appearance from the opposite end. If that's your cuppa T. Harris makes a good point about the impressions. Keep them updated to popular and/or local figures rather than the age old ones you saw DW use 15 years ago.. To tell the truth I rarely see anyone doing anything but a copy of David Williamson's routine right down to the restaurant story. He's such a versatile prop there are hundreds of original gags and line you can come up with. The biggest laughs I get with him are mostly the lines I came up with. Cos I'm great. George |

Jeff Justice used to do a great Rocky Racoon back in the 80's and early 90's. I rememeber he performed at Abbott's and I believe Tannen's conventions. He quit the comedy club scene around 1994 to do the motivational speeches and also teach workshops on stand up. He still does some magic in his motivational speaking, but I don't think he does Rocky. He posted this recently... a short version of him doing his Rocky routine at the Punchline around 1993 or 1994.

Using just the tip of the tail..an imitation of
Howie Mandel's soul patch...right under your lower lip.. Any other current..(not old school like Abraham Lincoln..though I still use it for some age groups stating 4 score and 7 years ago....sometimes adding it was George Washington and letting the kids correct me... sometimes adding 4 score and 7 years ago..(pause) I had hair.

This week, I again experimented with putting a small amount of water in "Bob's" drinking cup. His face is wet when he comes up for a look at the audience.
Votes in this week from the audiences, the water is a more of a reaction. (Don't know how this will effect the puppet long term..but I think occassional use like this is worth the shorter time of prop replacement.) Throwing incomplete pass to audience members with quip on the KC Chiefs(our are team) also seems to get mixed reaction depending on the age of the audience at the venue.

Another addition to put some more spring into this prop....
After doing the Death of Bob bit...I slowly tear up, let Bob slowy hang by his tail....with my other hand I pick up my harmonica and play taps...very slowly at first...da.......da......da..........da.....da....DA....(ect) As I go into an over played Eulogy...he starts to come back to life..first noticed by the crowd...but of course not by me.... Tis the season..to give and receive..... Happy HOYC.....(holiday of your choice) Harris (and BOB)

Here is a great routine by David Tallent where Rascal makes a short appearance. This is after he has introduces the coon to the audience and has put him in his cage behind the cow milker.

I recently added a new prop to Ricky Rox the Magix Fox. First he comes out and interacts with the audience a little. Then when I explain that Ricky is going to read someones mind I slip a pair of finger eyes on him (they are held in place by magnets). They look hilarious! It is especially funny when he is animated! Here are a couple of snapshots with and without the eyes, unfortunately I don't have a video clip yet.

Excellent combination of "props".
I will see how it plays...also I have various sized "googly eyes" that I will try on "Bob".(my Rocky) In a couple of weeks, Bob and the other puppets will be back in middle school classrooms, sharing on puppets, drama and life. Santa was good to me and included colored duct tape in my stocking...Bob may get a few extras ..perhaps a K.U. or M.U. tape "sweater". Be safe, well and creative. Harris

I have been using Rocky Raccoon since I worked with Ken Fletcher at Magic Masters in 1986. It's a great prop, and I highly recommend it.
Jeff Justice, David Williamson, and Mike Abston, mentioned earlier in this forum, all worked at the same Magic Masters shop in Atlanta during the 80's. They were trained by Dennis Sowers, who I believe is the best manipulator of Rocky I have ever seen. I think it was either David or Jeff who wrote the manual that comes with the raccoons. I have a whole chapter of Rocky routines in my book "Kids Think It's Funny" (link in my signature), and I'll be doing a lecture on Rocky routines at the Kapital Kidvention in late January 2010 |
