My grandfather worked for a boss whom he didn't particularly care for. He told the man, "Sir, when you die, they're gonna bury you standing up, because you're too crooked to lie down".

Even though Old, I can't die...some of me might but as long as there are people who remember me...collect my things or read my words...untill the internet fries to a crisp and the planet disintegrates I'll be around. Even after that I will always exist because after so many years on broadcast radio my voice will travel in space forever...at least untill the next Big Bang event...and by then I think I'll be ready to go. Old hams don't die, they just get grounded? CUTE! Especially since I have a ham radio license. Old hams don't die, they just spark the gap!

As for Walt Disney, his funeral was a Mickey Mouse affair! Smile

On a tad more serious note…
I find many magicians are oblivious to how the aging process changes their image.

It takes years of trial, error, and effort to develop a stage persona or character…
so it does not seem fair we’d need to alter that in mid-stream,
just have our professional image deteriorate before our eyes,
but it’s another rough fact-of-life that “nothing stands still”.

There was one beloved magician,
who portrayed a sort of rakish, slightly bawdy, gentleman in his act.
In his forties and even into his fifties,
this persona came off as both amusing and charming.

But, he never let his character “age” gracefully as “he” aged.
By the time he was performing in his seventies and eighties,
the audience felt he came off as offensive and inappropriate at best,
and just a plain “dirty old man” at worst.

Another well known performer developed a charter that was somewhat
“Puckish” or a eternally ageless and like “Peter Pan” in nature,
and built a career on that personality.

Now, as he ages, with a bit of a paunch and some sag in the face,
that persona is beginning to crumble into seeming ludicrous and farcical,
and the aging entertainer seems oblivious that his character is overdue,
for an overhaul, with alterations in costuming, approach, and style.

My last examples are drawn from the magicians who marketed their
suave, sexy, exuberant, “man about town” personas with great success…
but as they got older, the boyish charm naturally began to fade,
and the lithe body did not move as seductively and or gracefully as before.

Those that were smart, allowed their persona to change and grow,
into a more sophisticated “elder statesman” mature magician image,
Those who were less savvy still prance around in too-right pants,
and wink at too young women from the stage.

Fine actors like Sean Connery, David Niven,
or Maggie Smith, and Vanessa Redgrave,
learned to “grow” into their looks and abilities as they gracefully aged…
Other actors are still trying to compete as “leading men and women” in their sixties,
and suffer from too many facelifts, too much botox, and a asinine sense of style.

It is imperative, if unfortunate, that magicians be brutally honest with themselves,
constantly assessing how we are perceived by our audiences,
and “roll with the punches” as time goes by and the clock ticks…
What was cool in the disco-days,
looks plain absurd and out of place in this twenty-first century.

“Oh wad some power the giftie gie us
To see oursel's as others see us!
It wad frae monie a blunder free us,
And foolish notion…”
(-from Robert Burns poem- “Ode to a louse”)

Magically,
Walt

Lets face it. It's hard to see the truth about ourselves. Many actors have had to adjust when a role was given to them that, in their mind, they were not ready for. An aging actor, may be shocked the first time he/she lands a role where they have grandchildren.

As for the magician who had a good act at 50 and it looks tacky at 80, he just doesn't see himself as old. I, too, am having problems aging gracefully. After all, it creeps up on all of us so slowly that our dying day is here before we're aware, or even ready for it.
