Came across an interesting ad in an old (but hardly ancient) issue of Genii (vol.35 (1970)that I thought I should share. "Danny Dew's Magician's Supplies" of Phoenix, Arizona was offering, amongst other things : "Cups and Balls (Haden) rare - silver-plate" for the princely sum of $27.50; "Paul Fox Regular Size Cups - heavy silver-plate" for $25.00; and "Paul Fox Giant Cups for Chicks or large loads, silver-plated" for $35.00.
Bill Palmer will have a much better idea of this than I would but I would venture to think that a set of Connie Haden cups alone would probably fetch well over $2000 ($3000???) if they were to come on the market now. At any rate, it certainly goes to show what the emergence in recent years of a collectors' market for vintage cups of comparative rarity has done to prices. Fortasse PS : Those who hold the limited series of Sherwood cups should take note of what this may portend! |

Yep...if only you'd have known. Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing?

Right now supposed to be the golden age for the cups & balls, so go out there and buy what you can while they last.

Sounds like a great Twilight Zone plot. Sending off the money to the address in
the magazine and having the cups show up... |

One of the running gags at collectors conventions is the reading of the ads in the magazines...from 1948. Houdini posters for $5.00. AARRRRGGGH!
These price increases are not out of reason, though. If you consider this -- a Gibson banjo, model RB-250 made in 1970 sold for roughly $700.00. Now the list price on an RB-250 is over $3,000.00. However, to purchase a 1970 model, you would probably have to pay a lot more than that, if it were in good condition. The price differential is based on something quite simple. It's supply and demand. Out of all of the Connie Haden cups -- possibly 50 sets -- only about a half dozen sets are known to be around. The Golden Gate mini cups that are in the museum -- there were probably a hundred or so sets made. Three are left. How do you put a price on something like that? You can't.

Are there any information available pertaining to the types of cups made (past and present - how many were made, who made them, where to buy them, etc.?
Is there anyone tracking these cups and making the info available? |

However, some of these things are almost impossible to track. For example, there has been an indication that there was a third size of PF/DD cup manufactured. There is a note on Jim Riser's web site that says that Danny cut down the chuck for the big cup. I got to looking at my chick cups, and realized that I might have been misinterpreting the statement. The early Danny Dew chick cups had a larger bottom than the later ones. I have cups of both vintages. The Busby chick cups have even smaller bottoms. The number of cups that were destroyed, thrown away or lost is also impossible to keep track of. And as far as getting them, well, you need to watch the auctions and the used magic dealers lists.

"Cups and Balls (Haden) rare - silver-plate" for the princely sum of $27.50 Incidentally, considering inflation, these would have 'felt' like this (below) to us today. "Cups and Balls (Haden) rare - silver-plate" for $150.02 "Paul Fox Regular Size Cups - heavy silver-plate" for $136.38 "Paul Fox Giant Cups for Chicks or large loads, silver-plated" for $190.94 Still, not a bad price! -todd
