I am wanting to do a close up routine with butterflies and I am after some advice. I am currently at university with a very small room and am not allowed any animals. So I was thinking of using butterflies. However, does anyone else use them? I'm not sure that they are very practical to perform with though and was wondering how to keep them, etc. Also (other than going from garden to garden) does anyone know where I can get some from?

Any comments are welcome as I am desperate for advice.

Butterflies do not seem very practical to me for use in magic. They are very fragile animals and have quite short lifespans. To keep and raise them would require space, especially since you will not likely get many performances from one butterfly. Also, keep in mind that the greater portion of the animal's life is spent as a caterpillar.

What do you have in mind specifically? Would an artificial butterfly work?

Must they be alive? Check online for a new line of butterfly home decorations that use nicrome memory wire to actually flex their wings. There is a European company that produces an advertising toy shaped like a butterfly that actually flies. Won't fool anyone into thinking it is real, but it can emerge flying from a prop, changed from confetti into butterfly, whatever. I have not found them in the states yet and will post the website when I next post.

Then again, you could just use a spring animal. OK, a tiny spring butterfly might be a tough sell.

Rocco is already doing this. Why not choose a different presentation?

If you decide to go forward with this, then perhaps you should get in touch with him as you asked if anyone else was using butterflies? Rocco!@

My daughter went through a phase of raising butterflys. You can purchase butterfly kits for a nominal cost and you only need a space about the size of a kitchen toaster to keep them. If I remember correctly, they must be kept in the dark for a period of time at first. Check this web site. http://www.milkweedcafe.com for all the specifics.
ReyRey is correct. Rocco is one of only a few magicians to use butterflys, so sak07, this could be a reputation builder for you.
BTW, if you want to contact Rocco for advice, his E-mail is Rocco@dlite.com

If you are at university you can probably get loads of advice from someone in the biology department. I am sure that most etymologists would be more than happy to help you with more care and raising info than you would ever want.

Good luck

Cheers,
Mark

Thanks for the advice guys, it's really appreciated. I found a supplier in London and it seems that it might not be as impractical as I first thought. Sounds like they are easy to look after. All I need to do now is work on my routine.

Be very careful when you touch their wings.

Also, sometimes those wonderful creatures tend to fall asleep before their appearance on stage...it doesn't look too good when you open your production item and nothing happens!! They need a constant light source.
