When you open a new deck of Bicycle cards, what do you do with the Jokers and Junk cards? What about the Cellophane wrapped around a new deck of cards? What about the box from an old used and abuse deck of cards?

Carefully remove the Cellophane and put it away, save the Jokers and Junk cards, and take care of the deck's box.

I have a specific storage box for the Cellophane to protect the shape. For some of my tricks I like to set up the deck in a specific order and then re-wrap the deck to make it look brand new. Some people feel that a new seal is all that is required to make the deck look new, but you never know when you need that cellophane.

There is a deck box full of Jokers and Junk cards for future projects. Sometimes I need to practice tricks or stunts and I don't like to waste the cards from the deck, so these saved cards come in handy. Also, I like to use these cards for Mindbender from Ellusionist, and these cards really get bent outa shape.

I just learned a deck switch using a modified deck box, so saving these boxes works for that. Sometimes the box gets beat-up from being in my pants pocket and look unattractive, throw that one away and use another saved box. Oops, did I just say throw away? Hhhmmm, maybe I better save it!

Save, save, and save.

Have fun.

Great advice Keith. Lot's of times people look for something to make those "special" gimmicks with or use to create a fun effect. And those cellophanes? Pure gold if taken off with care.

I'll bet you regularly find ways to use what you have saved.

A good magician has a hard time throwing ANYTHING away... You never know when that curious piece of wrapping paper is going to make the perfect coin fold for a special performance, or that piece of leather thong would make the perfect wrapper for a production tube, ETC.

Of course, available space is always the limiting factor (unless you are a Jim Marshall type...)

Personally, I've got boxes of curious objects that have no immediate use in mind, and there are quite a few card boxes and extra jokers in those boxes...

Always strive to think of new uses for (extra)ordinary objects!

Another good use for the extra cards is for the practice of card splitting. I've started card splitting lately (lots of fun) and the extra cards with at least a back are useful for making double backed cards. All of the extra cards are useful for practicing card splitting. I'm practicing splitting and gluing with these cards so that when I get ready to try a serious project I'll have a little extra experience.

Are there any brands of cards where the extra cards, other than the jokers, have the same backs? Instead of using the jokers to make a double back I would like to use the other useless cards.

Sometimes you can find a card with the same back design that isn't a joker. I've found them before and it has been a regular advertisment card. But, I haven't seen any lately.

I save all my worn out and unusable cards for scaling practice. Having a huge stack of cards to throw just makes the session last that much longer before I have to scurry around on my hands and knees picking cards up from the floor. I found it easier when I realized the cards didn't have to be faced. I listen to Go Magic Go while firing cards at a photocopy of Ricky Jay on the cover of "Cards as Weapons."
