Hi All,
I recently picked up a copy of Scotty Yorks X-Rated cups booklet (Along with the Lecture & Coins) and I noticed inside only the cups booklet is hand stamped "Copy Number 1 Of A Limited Edition" Anyone know how many of these were made? Any info would be appreciated. thanks! -Todd

Scotty's routine could be performed in the nude, if so desired.

Breast-shaped cups?
I must confess that when Pete mentioned the word "load", my first thought was Goshman Ding Dongs being revealed under each cup.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I have the booklet at home, so I can't confirm the details until later tonight. I think it's a single ball jumbo load. The entire routine is self contained (meaning the load is concealed within the setup) so you don't need pockets or pouches to do this, thus the "no clothing required" connotation of the title. I do think it required you to be seated, or in Scotty's case have a handy shelf behind the bar.

You are correct. Also check Al Schneider's latest idea loading and not revealing the loads untifl later, on his website.

In other words, I don't think it's possible to know who has the true #1 of a limited edition (whatever the limit was)! I guess only Scotty could answer the mystery. Back in the early 90's, Dan Korem told me that he thought this was the best C&B routine out there when I asked his opinion about the various routines. Terry

I believe what is being called the "cover page" on Scott York - Cups and Balls" (small booklet - orange cover - as sold by Jeff Busby) is actually the inside "cover" page. This page is a copy of the manuscript earlier sold by Scotty during his early lectures. I don't recall that the numbering of the limited editions went much further than the first couple of lectures, but I will ask Scotty if he remembers.

I always like the Limited edition angle to book sales. What they really mean is "Supplies are finite." which all supplies certainly are. It is a credit to him that the number was left blank.

OK - everyone - here is the answer to all your questions about the "X-Rated Cups and Balls" from none other than the old Silver Fox himself - Scotty York. His memory of all this is better than mine, although I do recall much of it upon reading his response. Enjoy - Bill
"Hey Bill, The original numbered booklets had pages 8 ½ x 11 inches and were spiral bound with a black plastic binder. The covers were a red soft-board, also 8 ½ x 11 inches in size. All the illustrations in the numbered limited edition booklets were in color. This was done by hand using colored pencils. As a point of interest, shortly before I hand colored the limited editions, I had visited Martin Lewis. During my visit, Eric (Martin’s very talented father) allowed me to read through his personal notebooks. Eric’s notebooks were all done by hand, using calligraphy, and all his hand done drawings were in color. I’m sure this probably inspired me to hand color a few limited editions of my cup and ball booklet. In addition, I also did a few limited editions of my first lecture and coin booklets. These too were 8 ½ x 11 inches, spiral bound, and the illustrations were hand colored. The lecture booklet had brown covers and the coin booklet had gray covers. The first full set of these three hand colored booklets, that I distributed, were given to you Bill, as I recall, and were most likely numbered either 1 or 2 (I might have retained the number 1 set for my own files, but I’m not sure). I’m not sure how many of these hand colored sets were distributed, but I’d guess the number would be a dozen or less. I do remember that I did give full sets to Danny Dew, Faucett Ross, Ken Brooke and Dai Vernon. Its very likely that Derek Dingle, John Braun, Paul Swinford, Roger Klause, Charlie Miller, Ed Brown and Milt Kort might have also been given a set as well, as I was either corresponding regularly with all of these talents, or was seeing them frequently in the course of my frequent government travel. I didn’t keep any record of distribution, however. As you know, I did sell the rights to these original three booklets to Jeff Busby. Jeff also obtained much of Danny Dew’s magic collection when he died. So I’d guess he probably obtained Danny’s set. When Jeff reprinted the booklets, he reduced the size to approximately 4” x 5.” At this time, I can only assume that he copied from some spiral bound booklets that he obtained, as at this time I had no booklets to supply him with. It’s my guess that he somehow acquired a copy of the cups booklet that contained the “Limited Edition” text on the title page, most likely from Danny’s stuff. As far as the booklets that you and I produced (non-limited edition) and that I sold at my early lectures, I doubt if we ever produced more than a couple of hundred. In the early years, I didn’t do but a few lectures. A couple locally and a couple at conventions, that was about it. You are right, the “X-Rated” came from the fact that the original routine was self-contained in the bag that held the cups and could be performed sans clothing. Yes, it did require loading one ball (only one Pete, not two) into your lap, while removing the cups from the bag. I guess if someone wanted to get real picky, even though a performer could perform the routine unclothed, if using a glass topped table, then the table would need to be appropriately dressed (with a table cloth). Over the years, I changed the routine numerous times and at the bar I performed the routine standing and, no, there was no extra ball on a shelf under the bar. In its current performance the routine is still totally self-contained, yet a performer could enter (sans clothing) walk up to any totally unprepared table and perform the routine standing behind the table. Not only can the entire original routine be performed, but after the three final load balls are produced, the center cup is lifted to reveal a small wine glass. The cup just lifted to reveal the glass is then immediately tipped over the glass and red wine pours from the cup, completely filling the glass with wine. The cups go back into the bag, the bag is rolled up in the close-up mat and the performer exits sipping his glass of wine. We really should write-up my current handling Bill and I do have a couple of new ideas that I haven’t even shown you yet. Scotty" |

Thanks Bill - I'd love to read Scotty's current handling.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler
