I thought this might be interesting for some coorporate events and such.

Have you ever been "checked out" for a job? If you did any major campaign shows, I'm sure you were. Other examples?

Does anyone see a market for magician with a security clearance? I guess it might also carry over into the same area as a background check for working with kids.

Who knows.?.

Back in the 90's I did a lot of shows on military bases down in Norfolk VA. Yes, they did a background check on me and I had my own paperwork. It got me into a lot of places that I could not have worked before.
It was a good venue to work, did a lot of repeat business for the various ships and such.
Something to look into!

I do millitary bases all the time and never once had a background check. Maybe the marines aren't as strict as one would think. I did have a background check when I was doing a show legueune for Rumsfeld last year when he was speaking on the USMC SOCOM.

Then also working at Hollywood Casino, I needed to have a check with the Illinois Gaming Board.

This was during Desert Storm, and I was performing on the ships themselves not just the bases.
All I know is that they did a check and I had to have papers on me at all times.
Maybe you just have a more trustworthy look?

Anyone (just about) can get on most military bases. Even after 9-11. I did a career in the Army, and if they couldn't none of my friends could have come to visit me in the houseing area.

I wonder if it would be a promotional / resume item for sending material to a defense contractor for thier holiday show.

Magician (TS XYZ cleared) seeks booking for your holiday party....

Jim:
You don't need to show a specific clearance, just your past mil/gov gigs.
I got lucky and ended up doing a Presidential Inaugural Dinner (yes, POTUS was there), and got some military gigs from it. Then I hit the jackpot and did ANOTHER Inaugural and now they KNOW I can pass the security check. So just build your client list with groups you are connected to, and they'll figure it out.

(Funny story: I did a holiday party on a military base in DC recently and it took longer to get through the gate than it did to do my show!)

Another thought for those not in the Washington, DC area like Jim and I are. A few free appearances at local military hospitals are a great idea, even if it never gets you any business. Smile

Hi Eric,

Nice to see you here!

Like Eric, I've needed a security check quite a few times.

I did the White House Easter Egg Roll a couple of times. I also did a show for Dick Cheney. Interestingly, the security to get into his residence at the Naval Observatory was MUCH more difficult and time consuming than getting into the White House. What does that say, I wonder!

The most intense place I've ever done a show was the NSA. I drove into the wrong area and was immediately surrounded by scary dudes with machine guns!

By the way, the background check is very different from having a security clearance. They just run your social security number through the watch lists to make sure you're not a baddie.

I have a regular client who is a defense contractor that works on very top secret stuff. I know this because I once asked what kind of stuff they work on and was told "very top secret stuff!"

I haven't ever needed clearance to go to their office to do a show. I'm just not allowed to look in their filing cabinets!

Best,
James

In the UK, just about every kids entertainer advertises that they are CRB checked (Criminal Records Bureau - see if you have committed crimes or are a known pervert) Not all are, however, and so there may be a few child molesters doing kids parties. (Worrying, isn't it?) The hoops you have to jump through to get the CRB check are a complete pain. Getting a gig on a military base is VERY easy in comparison (turn up with your driving license and a contact on the base). Security on bases didn't change much even after 9/11, or even 7/7.

I knew a man who kept saying "pliers, pincers, scissors". He was speaking in tongs.
