I have seen references to Stull watches, Stull fishbowls, and other Stull stuff.

What is "Stull"?

Robert Stull was involved in top secret radar technology back during World War II. He started Stull Magic in San Francisco and released a variety of mechanical effects in the 40's, particularly the famous Stull Prediction pocketwatches. I believe Pete Biro knew him very well.

Sorry, never met Mr. Stull... he was a tad before my time. Besides, I lived in Oakland and seldom got to San Francisco then (later worked there).

George hit it on the head. Harry Anderson and I had a discussion once after a few drinks (more like an arguement) about the spelling of Bob Stull's name. Harry swears it's "STUHL", as it's spelled in the book "Wise Guy". If you've read the book, it tells the story of Harry's "Stull/Stuhl Mental Miracle Watch", and how it was destroyed early on. Harry was trying to trade some magic to me in exchange for MY Stull Pocketwatch, but I wouldn't go with the deal.

Amos, next time (if we ever) we see each other, I'll bring my Stull Watch along and show it to you. I also got a Stull Fishbowl in a collection a few years ago, but sold that off.

That is interesting but the name of the Magic company was Stull Magic. He was referred to as Robert Stull in the ads. I did quite bit of research when I remade his version of the fishbowl.

It's "Stull" on my instructions for the Stull Watch, too. In the Bart Whaley book, "Who's Who in Magic", he's listed as Stull, Robert.

I'm just speculating, but is it possible that the name was originally "Stuhl", but was changed to "Stull" to make it appear less German? There was a lot of anti-German sentiment in the US, even as late as the 1970s.

I ask because residents in my home area changed their pronunciation of a number of town names for that reason.

And, here, near Memphis, Tennessee, we have "Germantown". Go figure.

Hi, I'd like to contact anyone who uses, or has used a Stull bowl in their act. I have two, that are different, and both need a bit of magic something that has yellowed over the years. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction to diminish my test every material time...Thanks

They sell plastic at Hobby stores, you can also purchase it on line. All of that type of plastic turns yellow over time when not properly stored. Use Google search engine. There is big plastic company online reference often here on the Café, that sell every type of clear plastic there is. Hopefully someone will help with the name.

I talked with Ted at length. If he sends me his address, I can send him a sample of the plastic I used. I don't know what it is call. My cousin worked in a plastic supplier and got me the material as it was trim offs. I think it is a CAB type of material.

A magic hug to Richard for mentioning CAB (Plastic), as it appears it's specific Gravity ranges for 1.17 to 1.3
