The show I wrote about is going to be coming up again in June. However, I've just about exhausted all of my effects that are large enough to be seen by 350 teenagers in an auditorium. See, my usual shows are close-up and parlor, but every now and then something like this comes my way. This would be no problem normally since I could just use the small number of effects I have reserved just for these situations. However, having done this show for three years in a row, I'm passed that point. So now it's finding enough larger material, that can be performed by one man, without needing a musical track (tried having one and they always play it too late, too early), for the lowest price with the highest..."wow factor" haha. There you have it. Any suggestions are welcome. Kyle

How about doing a straitjacket escape? Mark Cannon has gimmicked and un-gimmicked jackets available. He also sells books and DVDs explaining the methods.
I get a good response when performing it and I run about 8 minutes in the extended version. |

Hi Kyle,
I'm sure you know this already but "wow factor" doesn't necessarily mean bigger props. Yes, you want your props to be seen but the biggest part of "wow factor" is "actor" and that means YOU. It's a lesson I'm still learning. Having said that, with a small budget, take a look at of these ideas: 1. Baxt Better Newspaper Tear ($95 from Hocus-Pocus.com) 2. Snowstorm From China ($19 from Hocus-Pocus) 3. The Invitation ($15 from gospelmagic.com) 4. Pavel's Super Simplified Walking Knot ($125 from Hocus-Pocus) 5. Quick Cash Lottery ($55 from fairchildmagic.com) 6. Mental Balloons ($75 from Hocus-Pocus) I'll stop now. These can look pretty big on stage plus a couple use several volunteers which tend to make a routine look like a bigger production. Really, just start browsing the online magic shops and let your mind run wild. You'll get enough ideas for 10 shows. Cheerio, Kerry

What about the victory cartons? Is that the name? A Grant book that is all large cardbord boxes turned to stage illusions. Someone here will know the specifics.

Hi Kyle
What sort of things do do currently do? Where in Ohio do you live? Laflin's Russian Rings always seem to play well. Palmo Red to White 6' streamers. Splendo or Blendo ChrisG

Sorry to inject a doubtful note, but the "footprints" story is an elegant allegory already - trying to "illustrate" with magic a narrative that is ALREADY an illustration is a bit like trying to illustrate a painting or a song - leave the original to do what it does best unless you can improve it.
Now, if you could find an effect with disappearing/reappearing footprints, that might be a way. |

Thanks for all the ideas so far guys. I really appreciate them.
Kerry- Thanks for the advice on showmanship and your recommendations. ChrisG- Silk Magic, Vanishing Bandana, Coloring Book Bible, Rope magic, that's been what I've been using recently for the larger shows that I am asked to do every now and again. However, usually I feature a lot more close-up.

Kyle -
Several years ago Kerry published a routine in the Fellowship of Christian Magicians publication, "Christian Conjuror" entitled "Dream Reader XJ-700, a.k.a. The Invitation". Most of the props - with a few substitutions/modifications, can be found at Wal-Mart or Target for less than $40 - depending on how elaborate you want to go. The main item is available from Kerry himself, I believe. PM him for the specifics. This routine has a very strong gospel message and could very well serve as your closer. Hope this helps. peace, phill

Is this the same effect that Kerry mentioned as no.3 on his list above of recommended effects?

Hi gang,
Nawww. I don't supply The Invitation. I just thought that other gospel workers might like to use the routine, and since the basic paper tear idea is NOT original with me, I asked Steve Varro (www.gospelmagic.com) if he might like to produce my "variation on a theme" and add it to his product line. I gave him the artwork and he supplies me with refills at dealer cost when I need them. Win-win-win for everybody. Cheerio, Kerry

Thank you all for all the ideas and advice so far. I really appreciate it. Keep 'em coming!
However, here's another question to add to it. I don't have music for my routines, how to go from one effect to another smoothly? Last year, if I paused for a few seconds to get my next prop, the soundman decided to help in his own way by playing a southern gospel quartet over the speakers. It didn't really help the mood... Any advice?

How about a good tt trick? You could do a burned and restored silk effect.

Also, you may want to try using a Bible coloring book. These always seem to get a great response!! They also can be used with various truths you would like to express.

Thanks for all your ideas so far. I really appreciate them.
I had an idea. A cut and restored rope routine...but with a cell phone. Out of all the girls there, the chances that some will have a pink Razr is very high. In fact, I already know a few people who I know will have one. The thing now is getting a duplicate phone that doesn't work that I can swap out for the girls' phone. This way, I can totally destroy it, and then put the pieces in a bag, and there is her phone good as new! What do you guys think?

Sounds good. It should go over pretty well if she doesn't faint, or even attack you for breaking her phone!
Try to do this without using a change bag but just your bare hands............. and maybe a topit. |

Not sure whether you would consider it a high impact illusion, in fact the creator seems to prefer it used as an illustration, but nonetheless, Andre Kole sells a version of his three ball illusion under $50.

Joe Marotta- Good thoughts on it. Methods I had thought of was the already mentioned change bag, a devil's napkin, or a topit. I think one complication might be finding the duplicate phone for the effect. At the moment, that's the main difficulty.
revlovejoy-Thanks for the idea. I've thought about it, I might go with it.

Some electronics stores have dummy phones of current models of cell phones, made from metal / plastic. They use them on display, instead of real phones. They look very real at a casual glance.
If you have a friendship with a contact in an electronics store / cell store, you could see if they'll sell you one. They can usually buy more dummies from their supplier for about $5 each. It is not their usual policy to sell the dummy phones. They get them in for display purposes. Don't ask me how I know this. My lips are sealed. - Donald
