A question was asked in another forum...the place I cull many of my ideas for these posts! The question concerned patter and whether one should memorize and use the patter that comes with a particular trick or not. It's a REALLY good question and I have a take that is not really the one normally espoused. Here is my answer to not only that question, but in a larger sense, an essay on HOW to become good at 'doing' your own original patter!
Virtually all invention is based on what came before. Great 'writers' are almost always voracious readers. Great painters look at other folks paintings. Patter is no different. There is great value in learning the exact patter that someone else came up with if for no other reason is gives one training in the memorization OF patter that is specific to a particular trick and presentation. If this were not so and not of value then one would NEVER see a 'Play' produced and presented again and again. I just watched a production of Hamlet, my favorite play of all time. Actually, about my favorite anything of all time. The exact verbal presentation was used, but it was placed and set in a modern city. The country of Denmark morphed into the Denmark Corporation, etc. It was really very compelling. Once one has learned to 'do' patter that is pre-scripted one will start to see 'other' ideas for patter using the same trick. Everyone is told to have original patter, but no one has a method or plan for the 'doing' of same. The 'plan' used by most creative folks is to 'do' what has come before and then take that experience and synthesize original product. Here is a suggestion hundreds of my students have used in the past to augment the comments above: Begin a program of READING OUT LOUD FROM VARIOUS SOURCES. Do it for at least 15 min a day and do it at least 5 days a week. Read from poetry, plays, novels. In other words, read from sources that are LIKE ... Patter! Just simply do it and do it and do it. For one, your ability to 'speak' generally will improve immensley! And, second, you will start to form the ability to create your own patter. Remember to create patter you MUST ... DO Patter! All best,
