How can I make a deck of cards appear and disappear? I have a deck of Vintage 1800 from Ellusionist and want to make the Vintage 1800 deck take the place of new Bicycle deck. Deck switching is one idea, but I don't have those skills yet especially in street magic. That does not mean I am going to give up on the idea of deck switching, but it would need to be done cleanly and easy for me to start with. I was kind of hoping for a box of some kind to enhance the trick.

I am already researching the Corradin Box, Fantasma's Dragon box and Dragon Fire Box, Okito/Nielson Prosto Box, and Siam Box. I don't have any of these boxes yet, need to know which is best to start with. Or any other boxes that I might not know about yet. The Okito/Nielson Presto box might be a little too big for what I need. The other boxes might be small enough for me to carry around for street magic.

Please help
thanks

Well I was going to suggest looking into a Topit, but if you're looking to do this for street magic then your best bet is just a deck switch, perhaps out of your back pocket. If you're trying to do "street magic" then you don't want to carry around boxes and such things. The idea of "street magic" is to have it appear as natural as possible.

If method were not an issue, what would your ideal look like? Why does the deck become vintage? Do you have a story or reason?

I just noticed that you wrote this, and it scares me. This lets me know that clearly you are not yet a skilled performer, and yet you're going to attempt "street magic?" I would seriously reconsider attempting this until you at least have enough confidence, let alone the technical skill to pull off a street performance. I know this sounds rude but I assure you it is advice, and only sounds rude because you can't hear the tone of my voice right now.

Deck switches can work, but the change might be a bit too abrupt for the moment of the switch to go unnoticed.

http://www.chazpro.com might have an answer though... You will still have to do a switch on the off beat but you can switch for the 1800 deck covered in one of their deck shells. It will look exactly like the deck you were using (boxed deck, BTW) and it might then be easier to steal off the shell to reveal the 1800's.

There are other "do it yourself" gimmicks like this as well that just takes some time with a few spare cards, some white card stock and Scotch Tape to simulate the top card and front edge of a deck. If you do this, the gimmicked card can be cut into the center of the 1800 deck until you have a chance to ditch it.

I too am worried that you think you are okay to do street magic but not a deck switch !

I also think a topit is the way to go; have a second deck down the sleeve, vanish the deck and produce the other one.
I supose you could use a change bag.

Do you really NEED to change the decks ?

No street magic experience from me yet. Just entertaining family and friends. How else am I supposed to start? That is why I am posting in the "New to Magic" forum.

I mentioned Street Magic because I assume that would be the next step, once I hone my skills.

Everything I do now is for Learning Purpose. Before I do Street Magic, I will present myself in front of other Experience Magician for their expert advice.

I am a strong believer in Magic's number one rule - NEVER REVEAL THE SECRET! Therefore it would help me to get experience first before I attempt real street magic or any organized groups.

Thanks to those who mentioned Topic and Deck Shell. I do have the Deck Shell book, just not have gotten around to buying any Deck Shell, and it's beginning to sound like a good idea. Also, the change bag or the New Change cap sounds like a great idea, thanks for that tip.

To Josh: A spectator picks a card from a brand new Bicycle deck and then returns the card somewhere in the deck. I tell the spectator that the only way for me to locate the card is to send the deck to Houdini, on the other side, and have him show me the card. Poof, another deck of cards appear (Vintage 1800 deck). On top of this deck is the chosen card.

Thanks, and don't worry.

Well if you're going to send the deck back in time, I do think a device to do this would be acceptable. Another simple solution would be make an attempt to find it behind your back. After you fail to find it bring out the switched deck with a new card on top. Then your only obstacle would be ditching the top card.

We were all "new" at some time.

This nearly normal guy tries to stay "green"/"new" and open to ideas.

Perhaps a single card switch...down the road look to top change and one handed cuts...for full or half deck..down the road ...gypsy switch...

I am not sure if a full or half deck would work in the new change hat. It is on my thinking cap as a future prop purchase....Josh I like your idea of covering the "cold deck" with a stranger card. Palms used to scare me...now it is other things....

My suggestion is to
Use only one deck and one vintage card
Force selevtion and palm in the vintage or have the vintage already in the card box.
Put the cards back in the card box palm out the selection.
go back in time
Remove all cards from box
Cut deck
fan through
reveal vintage selection.

You could have the deck visibly change by performing "Nemesis" or "Revolver", which you can download at penguin magic. Both effects use "regular" decks and are very effective for an apparent deck metamorphosis, which I might add can be immediately handed out for a shuffle/inspection.

If you are new to magic, I would not do tricks that require a lot of credibility to land it right at the audience. A trick where you change a deck furthermore needs a good context. Just a deck switch for transformations sake will not land too good.

I would go for the topit method as well. Jay Scott Berry has a great one and a dvd which comes with it as well. I picked mine up at a convention about four years ago but I'm sure if you did a search you would be able to find his web page and buy one. Also search the Café for topits to get some extra advice on their usage as you will be able to use the topit for other effects,

Just remember that performing amongst friends and fellow magi is totally different
to performing in front of real people. As they say, "You just have go out there
an suck really bad, then your on your way.". The streets are tough though. Check
out those in the Side Walk Shuffle section to get more insight.

As far as your issue goes based on what you mentioned above, it sounds like to me that you can use the effects where decks change from blue to red, but apply it to your vintage deck and a regular deck. There are many effects out there which I think someone already posted but they didn't explain the reason behind the effects
they mentioned.(i.e. Nemesis..etc). So I think this would fit the bill for street
situation.

Let us know how it turns out and how your first street experience turns out.

Keith,
If you feel you are not ready for deck switching, then you are not ready to perform that effect. Always make sure you are 100% ready - without any doubt - before you venture out to perform. Don't feel rushed. Take your time, practice hard, and soon enough you will have the necessary skills. This can be applied to anything in magic. It's not a race. Just take your time and master the effect.
