This is footage from 1928 of the one and only Chaz Chase. Chaz was a Vaudevillian that later worked for Ripley's, at the Crazy Horse in Paris and on Broadway in Suger Babies.

His lighting of both ends of the cig and popping it in his mouth sideways was brilliant combined with the match eating. I'm guessing it would have to be done with a smoke of the "hand rolled" variety the filter would probably make it a little difficult to push the smoke out of both ends. Amazing find, thanks Todd.

Todd,
Quick question. Was the music that was used in the clip identified with Chaz? It's same music that Warner Bros. used to build a cartoon empire with.

The tune was "The Day the Merry Go Round Broke Down". It was a cute novelty number from the late 1920s. Warner Bros. picked up on it for their Merry Melody cartoons. It is strange to hear music that is so associated with something in different context. Someone stated, "An intellect is someone that can hear the William Tell Overture and not think of the Lone Ranger."

I believe that most of the Merry Melodies cartoons originated with the premise of having an outlet for music they already had in their catalog, and wanted to promote.
I might be wrong.

Carl Stalling was music director for the majority of the Warner Bros. cartoons back in the day. He peppered the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies with the music of Raymond Scott, because Scott's music was, as stated above, part of the Warner Bros. catalog. But, while it's true that Stalling wouldn't have been able to use Scott's music had it not been basically free, Stalling truthfully fell in love with it because it was the perfect driving force for a certain famous bunny, duck, and pig. These guys just would not have been who they were without their musical soundtrack.
To this day, I still play the Scott tune 'PowerHouse' in my head when I'm on my way to work on Monday morning. ![]() http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Stalling http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Scott
