When you make a post that someone finds helpful, and they thank you, is it proper to respond? Or just a waste of discussion thread?
eg: Josh: Just stick it up your nose. Other Guy: Wow Josh! That's brilliant. Thank you so much! I owe you my life. [Do I then post:] Josh: You're welcome. [Or not?]

Like Michael said, there are a lot of ways to waste bandwidth.
Generally speaking I don't think it's necessary. But I can also see how people feel the need to respond to "thank yous". My mother explained to me at an early age that it's is proper to respond to "thank yous" with "you're welcome". "Not only is it polite" she explained, "it's better for your health". I said how is it better for my health? She said "because when somebody says "thank you" and I don't hear you respond with a polite "your welcome", I give you a smack in the head." Sometimes old habits, that are that well engrained, die hard.

...and don't forget:
Every "thank you" brings you closer to the "eternal order". Look above. I know what I am talking about. |

Always be polite...unless you are in a 'bonding mode'...then you can be manly and sluff off anothers politeness showing all that you are so close to this other person you don't need to be polite to them...in fact you are so close you can put a dreogetory signature in your posts that will be instantly understood to be a mark of friendship and brotherhood. This is somewhat akin to burping in anothers presence and not excusing oneself because they will 'understand' you're only a pig for 'them'.
Yes Josh. Not at all a waste of bandwidth...how ever it IS a waste of time to read it or click to the thread thinking there is a new relevant post! Shmuck.

Wise words indeed. (Where's DaffyDoug's translator link?) Found it: "That thing you demand that with them these they make the examinación? And Why? Minestra? Nuts/mothers? They are decided."
