Vernon Wand Spin:
Hello, I bought Ammar's Cups and balls and received it in the mail yesterday. After looking at the wand spin (I got my wand in the mail today), I was kind of confused as to how it was done. So I took a video of me attempting it, and I was wondering if I was way off, or close, or what? I'm only practicing the spin right now. Once I get the spin right, I will work on the vanish. Thank you VERY much for your time, I appreciate it. http://s25.photobucket.com/albums/c89/do......empt.flv

You've got the right action. Now, try to keep the wand perfectly level. You will have to lift and then lower your elbow while you do it.
Good Luck, Mike

Are you working from Ammar's book or his DVDs?

This looks to me like a basic baton twirl, which I always found easier to do with a heavier stick because of the "momentum".
Woke up.

It's fine, but practice it in relation to the vanish.

Before I ever worked on the vanish, I also practiced just doing the spin around my hand that will be holding the ball. There are lots of ways to whack your own hand with the wand while doing the spin. Or your chest, elbow, nose, etc. Also, don't wait to perform the cups and balls until the spin is done. This is one move that takes a while to get down well.

It looks great. To enhance it, just get good movement with your wrist.
If you want to make things even flasher, which isn't really necessary but people love it, go to http://www.pentrix.com/videos/tricksplayer.html and apply some of these to the wand. They are actually easier with a wand.

Yeah, I use to be a member of Pentrix a while back... I never learned anything, but it's great advise. I'm gonna do that. Thanks for all the good advise, guys.

Your motion is fine, but you are being slowed down by the way you are holding your arm. I'm sure it is just so you could get it in the frame, but the action will be quite different if you stand up[!]. It is not a close-up move, at a table or chair, but an arm-waving move (albeit a local wave). With your elbow locked down for the video, you can't make the wand spin level and flat. My flip book of Ammar doing the move shows the wrist coming from above the elbow to below it, then back up. Try standing up to practice. Send us another look along the way. Keep at it.

I will have to disagree with plungerman about practicing it with the vanish. Learn the spin first, then add the vanish. If you work standing up, learn it that way. If you work sitting, practice it that way.

It was magicsanta that said practice with vanish; just a little correction if that's what you meant.
And, yes, I'm practicing the spin because Ammar says, "Before you can even attempt the vanish, you have to FULLY understand the spin." Thank you for your comments.

I went by the following steps to practice the spin to vanish....
I did the spin action and tried not to keep my hand wide open. Once I got the spin down, I practiced with a ball in finger palm til the window went away and my hand was used to holding something in it. Then, I practiced dropping the ball action for the vanish with and without the spin action. You will be doing it within a few weeks with practice on a regular basis. I also practiced the Williamson "drummer's" wand spin at that point in time and got them both nailed faster than I thought I would. Mobius |

The drummer spin, I got in about 20 minutes. I can do it 5 out of 5 times, and I have only been practicing it for around a day now.

The biggest problem with the Vernon spin is that to do it the way Vernon did it, you need to have both arms broken and reset incorrectly.

Has anyone read his biography? Is it a good book? If it is, I will have to check it out.

That's one move where the DVD is better than the book. I had the book, and I didn't believe it would fool Stevie Wonder. I even told Mike Ammar at a lecture.
Then he did it...and showed me how. |

I just finished David Ben's biography of Dai Vernon, and I loved it! Can't wait for volume 2. I have a new appreciation for what he's done for the art of magic. Long live the Professor!

As a side note, Michael Ammar says that the description of the Vernon/Mora Wand Spin as described by Lewis Ganson in "The Dai Vernon Book of Magic" is written incorrectly.
