I just purchased this 30 minute DVD by Isaac Louie and I felt it certainly didn't give any insight on how to perform for seniors. In fact, I thought it was more of a "what not to do" lesson.

That seems like a really awkward dvd even by the title...
I want to go far...

Can you be more specific - is the material inappropriate for seniors, either because of the amount of attention required of them or simply not something most would find interesting, does he exhibit poor technique or audience management, etc. I have read his notes on performing for seniors, and did not agree with everything he said, so I am curious why you feel this way. Thanks -

It was more appropriate for childen than adults. He talks to them like children. At one point he asks this elderly woman to cluck and move her arms like a chicken. She replies, "I can't do that." At another point he uses the Bongo growing hat on a woman including the monster face finale, to which the audience does not react.
The effects done are pretty much ones you do 5 minutes after getting them right out of the catalog. There is no routining, it is just a series of tricks. He even does balloon dogs for them too. There was nothing here to demonstrate any technique or effect that is geared specifically for an audience of seniors. The title is very misleading except for the fact that everyone watching seems to be in a lunchroom of a senior center. And for the price ( listed at $35.)the under 30 minute show is filmed with one stationary camcorder camera set up pretty far in the back and the DVD copy appears to be dubbed from a computer. |

Having worked as a Nurse Assistant many years ago in a Nursing Home, I can tell you that talking to an elderly person like they are a child is completely obnoxious. You definitely don't stick hats and masks on them to humiliate them. These are educated adults, maybe a little slower, but they are not idiots and hate being treated like they are. Sounds like this guy could use a little help in respecting our senior citizens.

Oh, so I believe I am a good magician, but sometimes I am performing and a senior comes in, then I don´t know what to do, so I allways run, this DVD seems to have the solution!! Finally I will end all my presentations.
Wonderful things do happen
Magic is so relative, that we all think we know what it is @pablovaldes |

This looks hilarious. I am buying a copy immediately.
In Spain it is being funny to make lots of fun at old people.
Think not what magic can do for you, but what you can do for magic.

If you, like me, are becoming annoyed by the ultra-long web sites, you might get a kick out the of parody of these sites at:
http://www.clickhereyouidiot.com/ The longer they are, and the more typos they have, the less likely I am to ever send them a cent. If you're that great at marketing why don't guys like him spell check???? |

If anyone goes to the website selling this...as given by someone above...you will see the guy actually states you don't have to be good to perform for seniors. This is a place to practice and be a bad performer. Gee...I need a DVD to teach me to NOT have a presentation and good act??? Many in the audience might not be physically in the best shape, but their minds are sharp and full of plenty of life experiences. We should not think they don't know it if we are passing off an inferior show to them. Some could probably have actually seen all the great magicians of the past that many of us have just read about. |

I wonder if it is possible to do a killer show for seniors? Do you think most of them would even remember as soon as the show ends?
All kidding aside, the DVD here by reading the reviews seems to be very poorly done and in poor taste. |

Just to be clear, I am not selling a DVD...I am selling a manual. The DVD is a "bonus" item to give you a good idea of what doing these shows are like.
I wonder why the person who started this thread only mentioned the DVD and not the book? The book is the meat of the program, the DVD is a freebie. Now for the negative comments about what I do during my show: 1: I use the bongo hat on someone. Yes I DO...but if you watch the DVD, it's on a staff person...NOT A SENIOR! If I remember correctly that the person I put the Bongo Hat on is the Director (boss) of the facility. They have me back three times a year at that particular place. Hmmmm... guess I'm doing something inappropriate for them to have me back three times a year right? 2: Making a balloon dog for someone. If you object to this, I strongly suggest that try it for a senior instead of just assuming it's too childish for them. If you ever do a show for seniors, blow up one balloon and you will have a line of people asking for them! 3: Asking someone to make a chicken noise. Yes the lady does say something like, "I can't do that", then I reply "you havent tried", then she does it. The person reviewing the DVD carefully left out half of what happened. Then she did it and had a huge smile on her face while doing it. 4: As for my lack of presentation, I don't believe that I translate on "TV" very will. When I perform for seniors, I don't do tell storys with my magic, that's not my style. I am me doing my tricks with some verbal comedy and gags. That's my style, like it or not that's me. You do your show your way (remember I'm not selling my show) The DVD was included to show you how I do MY show. Dislike my show or not, 90% of the seniors citizens homes that I perform for are repeat. In face I don't really market to them anymore, I book about 100 of them a year to repeat clients and the rest are clients referring me....so yes, I'm sure my show sucks and and I do inappropriate things (I'm being sarcastic). What I love about this topic is that one person that got the DVD, but didn't read the actual "how to perform for seniors" course that comes with it. Here's what Terry Parrett a columist in Sammy Smith's Funny Paper Magazine (a magazine for family performers) has to say about my senior course: "Just wanted to let you know about my results with the program. I bought it mainly with an eye toward booking a few extra shows between now and the 15th of September. I am primarily a school assembly performer, and the middle of August to the middle of September are normally very dead weeks for me, and I figured if I could find anyone who would book in those weeks, it would be found money. To date, I have booked 5 centers at $XXX each...I am very pleased with a nearly 10 percent return...I also think a few more may call in before it gets slow enough for me to start calling them... Thanks for an excellent program, and for reminding me of a nice little niche market." Now if the RC4MAG (the person who started this thread) is upset with my product and bought it from me, it makes me wonder why they haven't returned it? I do offer a 100 day - 100% no questions asked - satisfaction guarantee. No one has taken me up on this yet. I'm almost daring RC4MAG to return it if they thought my product was really crap...or were the just upset that they didn't get a free new show that they could do? Still go questions about my product feel free to contact me via PM or you can get my email address from my website http://www.perform4seniors.com xoxo Isaac Louie |

Since my name has come up in this thread, I thought I'd chime in.
Isaac quotes me correctly. I did buy the course, and ended up booking about 12 shows out of about 60 senior centers I contacted. I bought the course because I had a pretty empty space in my calendar right before I as going on a 2 week vacation, and I wanted to have some extra cash in my pocket for the trip. The program did exactly what I expected it to do, and I was more than happy with the package. Having said that, I only watched about 5 minutes of the DVD. I didn't really care about Isaac's performance, as I already have enough material to perform. I watched a few minutes out of curiosity, and to be honest, his style isn't my style. If he's getting rebooked by his clients, they obviously like what he is doing. Whether I like it or not is totally irrelevant. As far as doing balloon animals for seniors, I will tell you that I have had little old ladies with tears in their eyes from being so happy at receiving a balloon poodle or flower. I hadn't worked in a nursing home or senior care facility in quite a while, and I forgot how varied the residents are in terms of their awareness and functioning. Some of the residents are on top of their game, as sharp as they were fifty years ago. Others are not even aware of what is going on around them, and may spend most of your show crying, talking to themselves, or occasionally yelling out loud. Some of them will enjoy your show, and others will only respond when you give them a minute of one-on-one attention when you make them a balloon animal. Even the folks who are completely "with it" are happy to ask for a spare or two to save for a grandchild who may be visiting later. I can't say that I enjoyed working in this market all the time, but the response from the audiences made me feel like I was doing something worthwhile. I'm rambling a bit, but I did want to make it clear that if you're buying this package for the performance DVD, you're missing the point. For the 30 or 40 bucks he's charging for the package, it's well worth it. |

I bought issac's course yesterday --- read through the manual like made man -- and was absolutely impressed with the information. Even without the DVD it has given me a new niche to focus on and help fill up my calender. Thank you Issac
