Itricks.com - Herbert Becker believes magic owes him a debt of gratitude and since the publication of his book All The Secrets of Magic Revealed in 1995, his critics have contended the exact opposite.
His writing career has since seen the publication of several other books dedicated to magic exposure and in 2008 he will add The Magic Secrets of David Blaine to that list, his first book in 11 years. Yet no matter the controversy, the author is absolute in his belief that his contributions to the magic industry have been phenomenal. |

Penguin has a David Blaine section, should we close them down? I don't really see the harm in writing a book, unless he was giving away material that Blaine developed on his own. Which I really don't think is the case. Maybe the book will spark some interest and we will get a new member on the Café.

Try googling street magic and see what happens. You'll get every single effect from his first special exposed. Welcome to the Internet era...

But this is not a reason for the book to be published.
Because other people or TV or Internet expose, well okay this guy can publish the book. For the same reason then because masked magician exposed secrets from tomorrow its okay if I will expose all the secrets of magic to my friends and laymen. No guys this is not how it goes. And I am sad again to see that you magicians don't care about it. Magicians you became defeatists. |

You can huff and puff all you want, ain't nothing gonna change. A better solution is focusing on making your magic stronger. And besides, trust me, most laymen don't care enough to go out of their way to find out how we do things. Heck, most don't even care about magic in the first place.

I will make my magic stronger ANYWAY. I don't need anybody to expose magic in order to make my magic stronger. this is a proccess I do since I got into magic.
saying that nothing gonna change is defeatism. you should rather try to find a way to stop this and not say, okey we can do nothing about it. raphlo2 I wish you are right that laymen do not want to know about our secrets. and to tell you something, when I met laymen where in some cases they may tell me about how Criss Angel float where they saw it on youtube, I don't make too much deal about it in front of them. I find an excuse to say and I pretend to show that is not anything serious. but between us, don't you think that this should stop one day, even to minimize it? Neo |

To me this is just another way of someone tring to make a name and a fast buck off of the people that realy enjoy the art of magic....I am with raphlo2,most people would never think twice about a book like this, but it makes me wonder why anyone would think they are helping the craft by writing a tell all book on "the how it's done".....I bet he leaves out the part about all the hard work and practice we put into each and every trick so that when we show it for the first time everybody says those five little words HOW DID YOU DO THAT

Okay, over 10 years ago, the "Masked Magician" (and before that, for those who remember, there was another clown doing the same thing) divulged almost all the magician's secrets. How many of us (who were actually alive at that time...) stopped performing anything he explained? Anybody actually use a forklift to do a levitation? How about that cool gadget for resetting the time on a spectator's watch? Anybody use that? NO! Stop worrying about it. Nobody remembers what's written in Becker's last book, and nobody will remember this one, either.

DStachowiak is right, all you willdo is give him great publicity. If people see that magicians are mad about this, then they will want to see why.
Make your magic stronger, and make it yours, no one can steal that. You can publish anything you want in a book, it takes years to master the art, and there are already plenty of books on magic avaiable to anyone in the world with a computer and internet connection. This really is no big deal.

All books and dvds related to magic are exposing some effects. if you want to know how a trick works all you need to do is buy the dvd, but lay people is not willing to pay for secrets, even if they have a chance to read the book for free they would not "waste" their time.

I don't think that there will be much problem him publishing the book.
Not that I agree with his ideas but to be honest. Only the magicians who are interested in magic will read this book and the trick will not be exposed to the general public. Sung |

We should try and do something about all this exposure. That isn't right. It doesn't matter whether really care or not about people putting things out that gives all of our secrets away. What matters is that people are exposing us and none of you seem to care. You call your selves magicians!!!? I call you pathetic. This is how most people make a living. If we are exposed as magicians people wont hire us anymore. No one will make money and lives could be ruined. Is that how you want this to go down.

The sad fact still remains that the most exposure gained is from a lot of want to be magicians, many who are probably on this forum. How many youtube clips have you seen that shows the method so blatently because they can't be bothered to master the moves and are more interested making there own videos.
Lord of the Dragons - I have been performing professionaly for about 5 years, my last gig was for missstudent.couk in manchester, I think when you go out and perform for real people you will soon realize that the only ones usually remotely interested in these programs are the magicians themselves. Lord of the Dragons, with due respect to you, I don't think you have grasped the reality. Exposure has never been greater, but magic is enjoying a boomtime as entertainment.
The public is not interested in technical details of exposure, they want to be entertained. The main people checking out the exposure are the magicians. |

I agree with you BlackShadow. Studying a bit further into this I have realized that this is true. But nevertheless I think we are wrong to just sit by and let it happen but hey, everyone has there own opinon. So its not bid deal

Anything we do will have the opposite result we desire.
If we lodge a major protest, this will have no result except to give Mr. Becker more publicity for his publication. I can't remember which one, but one of the magazines had an editorial in which the editor mentioned that he'd been contacted by a television station owner who mentioned that they were going to run one of the "Masked Magician" specials and wondered if the editor knew enough magicians who would be interested in coming down to the station and lodging a protest, realizing that the protest would have no effect but to promote the special. There is a difference between legitimate teaching (even on the layman level) such as Mark Wilson's Course of Magic and the tripe Mr. Becker and his ilk put out. But I'm not certain what can be done to stop them without either actually aiding their cause or damaging that of legitimate teachers of beginning magic such as Mr. Wilson.

Well lets put it this way,
I had no idea about this book until seeing this post with DAVID BLAINE EXPOSURE, I thought hey whats going on now so had a look. Now I want to go and see what this book actually looks like and what it has in it etc. This is only because of this thread, I otherwise would not have known. Now if we are magicians with our fingers on the so called magic pulse and we don't know about it then how many layman are ever going to know? Even so maybe a couple of magi will be sparked from reading the book. Let it rest and stop fueling the fire, this will be my last post on here. Over and out! |
