I am doing a wedding fair soon and will take my PC with me.
I was going to leave a slide show running and wondered what music to have playing in the background? I was thinking of something like the David Stone Real Secrets of Magic music. Something quiet, modern, and funky, but subtle as well. Any ideas?? |

Hey Matt,
I do a lot of wedding fairs. To be honest, I'd leave the music out of it. It should be a busy day with lots of noise, not only from your stand but the people around you. The whole idea of a wedding fair is for the couples to go and talk to people who can help at their weddings....they want to TALK, so there will be lots of ambiance. I have just started doing a slide show of some performance photos, that's all. I think a PowerPoint may be too much...what do you intend to have on there? You should give the people the information straight from you, not a computer. Do as much magic as you can. I have a brochure, a couple of business cards, and a folder full of references/testimonials from past weddings. I talk a little bit about what I do (for people who don't pick up a brochure), but the rest is just magic. I try and get a big crowd and get them to make as much noise as possible (applaud, laugh) as this attracts even more people! It's tough at first because people see the word "magician" on your stand, and they think "Why do I want a magician?" and they walk straight past. I used a tip from the CROWDPULLER DVD: if in doubt, get a kid up. It works! If you have time, whatever info you have on your PowerPoint, try and put onto paper so the guests can take it away with them. Don't forget they will have brochures from ALL the other stands. There will be a lot of info to take in, and if they have a brochure, they can read it when they get home. If you insist on the music, though....I'd agree with the David Stone selection! |

Thanks for that, mate.
Any ideas for a download source for instrumentals like that? I will just have a slide show running, pictures of me in action, mixed in with some quotes and one liners, etc.....just to give people an idea what to expect. I have read your other posts on wedding fairs. I guess you are getting on better these days? I did one last year in Brighton without much success, and I was very disappointed. The one I am doing next month is a much smaller, intimate venue, so hopefully things will go better this time. This time, I also have my website up and running ( http://www.mattwainwright.com ) and some new cards and new flyers all to match, so that will back everything up, too. Any more tips, mate? I'm all ears.......... |

The PowerPoint presentation sounds really interesting. Have you tried placing the display in a store front window, or something like that?
There is a shopping mall nearby me where several of the stores are not leased. What you are discussing sounds like it might work in that location. Place a sign next to the monitor with contact info, and have a running slide show on the screen to catch attention. I have no idea of what they would charge to use a corner of a store front window for advertising, but it may be worth checking into. If there is a wedding boutique, photography studio, or tuxedo rental place nearby, it would be seen by appropriate potential clients.

If you are competing with other party sounds, it is another problem. However, if you really are the "show", it can be very effective. Petrik and Mia used music very effectively for small groups back in the late 70s, early 80s. It also handled language problems in the beginning. Today, for all of us that really work, the language problem is back. This week, I did a show for Chinese audience. Patter would have been no help!
