How many use a puppet in your show? If so, what type of puppet and what type of routine(s) do you use?
Currently, I have 4 puppets that I use 5 if you count the drawing board. I have a Rabbit in the Hat puppet, a monkey (ala chico the chimp), a monster (sort of Elmo combined with the Grouch) and a dog. I only use one in any particular show, but they always "go down a treat." The rabbit is based heavily on Sammy Smith's routine (which I now understand has its roots in Ricky Henson's original routine). The monkey (mine is named Max) is loosely based on Chico the Mind Reading Chimp by Bill Abbott. My Monster puppet comes out in October specifically for the young ones, and my dog is the best of the lot. I use him in every family (meaning entire families are present) show and most of my school shows.

I use 2 puppets in my main show. A wrap-around monkey called Geoffrey and a spring raccoon called Norman. In my other shows I tend to stick to the same formula and do 5 routines 2 of which are puppet based.
My monkey routine is probably the best routine I've ever made up for my kids work. It uses the monkey and Flyto Flower and lasts about 15 minutes. I have since come across other entertainers who have used Flyto with a puppet but am happy to say my routine is entirely original and isn't based on anyone elses. (Not that there is anything wrong with that, many of my magic routines started out with someone elses idea or concept). My raccoon routine involves a production, some original spring puppet shtick plus some of the usual stuff and ends with the raccoon escaping in a car. In my second show I have a vent routine with Henry a plush boy puppet and a square-circle type effect. At the moment, I am also doing a second routine with Geoffrey but am considering replacing it with an Axtell bird on arm routine. I don't know if this is true, but I had assumed Bill Abbott's Chico routine was inspired by Don Alan's monkey routine with Stanley. George |

I've never seen the Stanley routine, but I do know that Bill seems to have been influenced by Don Alan. So, it's entirely plausible that Chico's roots go back to Stanley. As I said, my dog is the star when I bring him out. I do an original vent routine with him -- along with some visual bits that were suggested by the good folks at Practical Magic. In fact, the dog is so well received that I'm trying to write a second script for him now -- for return engagements. I'm finding it difficult to top the original though. The visual bits really added a lot to the piece.

I just got Wolf's Wacky Wakoon -- haven't had a chance to debut it yet and this is the first puppet I will ever have used. Any suggestions from the more seasoned puppeteers? Hard to imagine this prop would be a scream even without selling it, but I wasnt it to be the most it can be.

I'm not sure about this. Isn't it very hard to learn working with a puppet and make it a bit realistic?
I think I'm first going to concentrate on getting some experience without puppet and when I feel comfortable about that, I may think of adding it. I think it can give a huge positive effect to your show, and it can be much fun.

I've been doing puppets since my dad had his ministry going when I was a kid. I fell in love with the Muppets and started with their inspiration.
Puppetry is an artform. I think it's great to get into it but make sure you get really GOOD or GREAT before you debut the puppet. There are lots of great materials out there. I think it's important to hand the audience the best you have...I think Gerto's on the right track. It takes a lot of work and feedback (video yourself if you can, or have a spouse or your kids work with you) to arrive at the point that your puppet takes on "life". Best of luck and God Bless, Chris |

I've stuck with dogs. My first was Krunt and he was one, next came Trouble and he is and remains a favourite of the young children and my last is YoungPisser the Dog and is the best yet but tends to work the older audiences.

Brilliant! Dudu, do you realise that now you're just a sidekick? Ding Dong the Dodo will be the star, and you will be the straight man. Will your puppet sing? Then what about a Sing Song from Ding Dong and Voodoo from Dudu?

I also use puppets and puppetry in my shows for the younger age set. Kids of that age love puppets and I can really engage the children to not only have fun but to empower them and educate them at the same time.
The children tend to associate better with the puppets and can relate to them well. because of this they can laugh at their funny antics and can also learn from the things the puppets may do wrong. I use several puppets in my show and have various routines crated for just myself and also some that are created with my wife and I working in tandem with us both using puppets. I have 3 of them: - Presto the Magical Bear: It is a bear puppet that is a full figure puppet and also can do a trick where the bear can determine any color of bar placed in his mouth. I never do the trick part but the bear is so cute as he is wearing a tuxedo and is dressed like a magician. - Harvey the Magic rabbit: This is my magical rabbit in the hat puppet created by John Domeleski(sp). I have used him for years and works great in tandem when presto tries to produce Harvey from inside the magic hat. - Rudy Rabbit: Rudy is the newest puppet in the show and was hand made by a lady who does wonderful puppet work. he is also a full body puppet and wears a wonderful purple outfit. he gets into all kinds of mischeif but always learns in the end. I also have the magic drawing board. I use it at many shows causebeing an artist allows me to adapt every show I do with the drawing board to the place I am at or the situation. Kyle

I just purchased the remote controlled drawing board over Christmas and have been searching for inspiration for a routine. I now have the makings of a routine which is based on the concept of a draw and tell story where the character ends up revealed as part of the story and the accompanying drawing. The character is a monkey and he bears a very strong resemblance to my son Jonah. When I point this out to my audience is when I plan to have Jonah come to life...he's always getting in mischief and playing with my magic props. I'm starting to work on what Jonah will actually say and plan to record his voice into my pre-programmed set.
I also own Vern the Bird/bird arm illusion but he hasn't made it into my school/library show. Maybe one day. |

My show is very Puppet Heavy.
Nigel is remembered by folks around the area. Actually I have two of him, though only one is seen at a time by my audiences. (I'm a gemini, said Nigel) From Nigel to a 3 string realistic snake, we have fun with the art of puppetry. Puppetry can go well with magic effects as well as juggling. Small googly eyes and a slit in a tennis ball was an easy way to add a bit to our simple juggling routine. Puppets also add to the market share for this nearly normal guy. From phone calls to web hits... Harris

We use several puppets throughout our programs, ranging from vent to behind the stage type puppets. It just depends on the venue. I mainly use vent puppets along with magic in the schools. When doing family crusades in churches we use quiet a variety.
Posted: Feb 7, 2007 2:11pm Hey! I notice Bill Abbott's Chico routine was mentioned above. Are there any good video segments you can view on the net at the moment of this routine or a similar one?

I use a rabbit in the hat and I also have an Axtell puppet that has never been used that I bought from an old friend. I also bought his "grannie" puppet and the kids seem to like her. How could you not like a little old grandmother? Hopefully one day, I'll add the drawing board to my act.

I was just down at the flea market held prior to the Magic Collectors gathering in Chicago, and I found a Presto the Magical Bear -- brand new for $10. The seller said that the electronics inside didn't work. But I didn't care. When I got home I took a look at him and discovered that the plastic shim that keeps the batteries from going dead in transit wasn't removed. I pulled that out and Viola' it works perfectly. I know this thing sells for like $100. So, that was my buy of the night. Puppet #6 for my show.
