Reading a mind IS like reading an entire book. You must look through the entire book, open it to every page and read every word, then your mind processes what you have read and gives it meaning.
Reading a thought is like opening the book randomly to a page and then reading a single sentence followed by closing the book. Under certain circumsyances, one can read a thought, quite often randomly (and as I tell my audiences, not all the time, they just pop into my head at times) but not someones entire thought process (reading their minds). Thank you Paul. Reminds me of a seminar with John Searle entitled "Where is the mind?".
I actually like to show I can "read" a thought process (how they are thinking of something) whenever possible. In my experience it has been more powerful than reading the thought alone. Makes people feel you are really peeking into their minds. -Alain Bellon |
