Yesterday, I got an e-mail from Brett Sherwood that had some good news and some bad news. The good news is that he will be manufacturing the engraved cups again. He will also be manufacturing some of the other products in the line.
The bad news is that the increased cost of metals, especially silver, and the fact that his spinner has doubled his price for spinning the cups is forcing him to increase the cost of the cups to the consumer. The prices will be going up radically. Brett feels that magicians will not be able to afford his cups any more. He may be right. These cups are worth every penny. Brett is not going to compromise his quality. So, at the end of 2007, there will be no more Sherwood cups produced. There is more information at http://www.sherwoodmagic.com/

I am aware of the price change, I was referring to availability of the Smooth Copper and Smooth Brass.

From the email, I assumed that smooth copper and brass would continue to be available. Just how I read it. The asking price of $375 is certainly not out of line, especially considering that they are regarded by many as the best in the world.

Looks like a set of engraved cups will now be around the $2800 price tag, based on the text at the website. But, nothing firm yet.

Yes, he has some smooth copper and smooth brass available, as a matter of fact.

It looks like I got my set (last week) at an almost unbelievably fortunate time.

I've been saving months while waiting for these to go back on sale. Looks like I'll never get a set now. I certainly understand the price increase. Still a bit bummed.

Given the cost issues described, I can see why Brett will have to increase the costs dramatically. For the engraved cups, I think he is right that they will be out of reach for most magicians, and the number who can afford them may well not be large enough to make the venture profitable. However, I'm reading the message as saying that they are closing up shop as far as all cups are concerned, not just the engraved cups. That is unfortunate.

From what I understand, the copper and brass cups will continue to be produced.

Hi All,
I thought I would come onto the Café and clarify the entire situation, so hopefully there will not be any confusion. Basically, the spinner/engraver that has been making my Engraved Silver cups has continually increased my production costs at a moderate but consistent rate. Since I first listed my Engraved Silver Cups on the magic market place, they were initially priced at $995 per set of three cups in 2003. The price was eventually increased to $1095 after several production increases, which I could no longer absorb quietly. Several further increases have occurred during the $1095 listing, but I once again absorbed these at my loss in my attempt to keep my prices as low as possible for my buyers. However, the latest increase has been the last straw, because I have been told that after four years of production my engraver/spinner has suddenly realised he can no longer manufacture my Engraved Silver Cups without a 200% labor increase...? Taking this labor increase in conjunction with the existing extremely high International Silver Rate, and as you can appreciate, I have sadly decided that I will be forced to delete this range of Engraved Silver Cups. I have based this decision on two criteria: First, I believe everyone that has seen/heard of my cups AND can afford them has already bought them. Secondly, I know from dwindling orders at the $1095 rate that raising the cups price even higher to an estimated $1550 per set of Engraved All Silver is a no-brainer. I intend placing one final stock order, which must also be a large minimum order of cups. If I do not receive enough orders, I may just finish the Engraved series now without a restock? If I do place the order, I will attempt one last bit of price negotiating to hopefully get the final prices as low as possible, but I doubt this will happen. However, if it does, I will happily pass this savings on to the buyer, and the prices will reflect this price drop. I am offering this final order offer in case there are any out there who wish to add an Engraved Set of Cups, or possibly a matching Combo Cup, before the series is finally terminated. I do intend to continue producing the Copper and Brass Cups, but these too have raised in price to $375 per set. I thank you all for your continuing support and must mention I am presently performing on a cruise ship, next stop Easter Island, so please be patient with my late replies. Kind Regards, Brett Sherwood |

Well, I've always figured one day I would get a set of the silver engraved cups, but I hadn't planned on getting them quite this soon. Sounds like it is time to "get" while they can still be "got"!

Brett just wanted to say how beautiful your cups are, and what a shame it is that they will not be available soon for people to see.

Thanks, Habu.
Yes, they are beautiful cups, but more important - 'functional art' - a term I credit to Mr. Bill Sutter. If I receive enough interest in another stock of Engraved Cups, I plan to make my final order for these Engraved Silver and Single Matching Combo Cups near the end of March, 2007. This gives those procrastinators out there about one final month to decide...? The order should take about three months to complete, so the final Engraved Silver Cups should be available about June/July, 2007. Cheers, Brett Sherwood |

Brett,
I wish to thank you for producing the finest Cups the World has ever seen. The tools (Cups) are without par. Cups of this nature are most appreciated if one performs with them. Smooth Copper or Brass for everyday routines, and the Finer Cups on "Special Occasions". Warmest Regards, Bill Sutter |
