I'm looking for a method for a color changing silk... Something where I can just hold the silk in one hand and it color changes with maybe the help of a reel or something.
I don't know too much about the subject. I just don't like the version where you run your hand over the silk making it change its color. David |

Hi David!
I've never seen such. Sort of an "automatic" change? Nope. Unless I've missed something lately. The one you're talking about is a self-contained silk system. Are you willing to put the time and practice for a "manual" color change? There are inexpensive devices designed for any size silks. If you're serious about this, may I steer you to this book? http://www.silkkingmagic.com/Rices%20Thr......Tube.htm Rice’s Through The Dye Tube That's the best advice I can give on this subject. Hope it helps! Doug |

Thanks Doug... I saw a fellow magician perform this during his act at magic camp and I thought it was one of the hottest silk effects I've seen to date! If I find out I'll definetely let you know what it is. lol

David,
You may have seen a color change with a device made by Mikame. It will actually change a silk from one color to another. Because it is a commercially available effect, I cannot tip the method. I will say it is a very neat and clean method. Hope that helps. David Williams |

Thanks Dave. I Think this is exactly what I saw performed.

There is also a method involving a pull and several other ideas in Rice's Encyclopedia.

The color changing silk streamer is done with one hand. It changes from black to a multi-colored streamer.

David,
If you are at Magi-Whirl 2007 in April or Twin City in June, catch me and I'll give some alternative methods. Ruth will be at Magi-Whirl with some dye tubes too. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Hi David:
Here's another possibility - it may take a bit of digging. 20 years or so ago, I saw Kevin James do exactly the effect you describe. He picked a blue silk up off the table, held it by one corner, and it instantly turned into a white silk. There was no running it through the hand or anything. It was startling, to say the least! I believe Kevin released the effect in his lecture notes. I'm sure you can contact him via his website and find out. Even if I'm wrong and he hasn't released it, maybe he'll share it with you. Good luck to you. Ron |

Bob, I won't Be at Magi Whirl 2007, but I will be at the S.A.M. Convention this year. Are you going to be there? |

David,
Early July is seldom available for magic conventions for an old cowboy and lobbyist. However, I will be at the International Battle of Magicians next week and the Twin City convention in Bristol next month. Those are nearer you. Late September, Lucy and I will be in New York. Rice's has a good variety of dye tubes for about anything you want to change. There is a link here on The Café. (Ruth is just "Rice" here on The Café.) She also has some very nice 18" blank card silks (hard to find). Get two and use a Sharpie pen to make your force card on one and "Print" the other through the dye tube. When they're gone, they're gone! Ask her about the single "pull through" color change. That may be your simplest solution. Good Luck! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
