Hi guys,
I have to say, this is an over looked routine. I performed this routine 3 times in a row this evening with killer reactions. Effect: A salt shaker from the table is used to dump salt into your fist. The salt turns into a beautiful white silk. After that, the silk is then stuffed into the fist and caused to vanish, only to appear in the salt shaker that was on the table the entire time! What do other magicians have to say about this routine from Garrett Thomas? I don't think this will be leaving my repetoire anytime soon! Brian |

I'll be seeing Garrett tonight, unless he is still stuck in the snow.
That sounds like a fantastic routine to use either by itself, or incorporate into a salt pout routine. Tony |

I was checking out his three volume set and it's not on there. It might be on his old VHS. I just saw Garrett lecture last week but was not aware of the routine. I wish I was because I would have asked him about it. Sounds like a great effect, could definitely use it behind the bar. From the way it played out from Brian it seems to be a killer. If anyone finds info as to where it is published that would be great!

I had the VHS, but when I moved here from Iceland. The wife threw out a Box that Contained a very cheap VCR and a lot of pretty good magic Tapes. Garretts was one of them. So ill have to wait to see if it ever hits dvd.

As much as I love the idea and think the routine is great, it does not clean up well, as written, in my opinion, as a strolling effect. Maybe for parlor or stage. For strolling a final phase is begging to be added. Of course, with the idea that "the final phase of this routine is left to the student" is certainly not a bad idea on Garrett's part but I don't think that was his intention.
Anyway, that's why I don't do it. I have not worked out a reset that makes sense. Basically, the table is left with a salt shaker with a silk in it. Not salt. And you are left with the opposite. Kind of reminds me of Mark Jenest's "Chap-Trick". Seems great on DVD but then when you actually think about using it.. you realize you can't. On the positive side, a routine like this that is not complete (from what I can tell) should not Need to be. In fact, more DVDs could be like this. Since DVDs don't require you to think/imagine (like books do) this could be a good way to urge the student forward. Almost how John Carney's "Secrets" book does. I will bring this up in a separate thread... p.s. it's on garrett's "any questions" video.

Brian, thank you for the thread.
Frank, thank you for the reference. I just looked at a tape I had not watched in almost 5 years. A lovely experience. Thank you all. Tony |

After a search, Any Questions? is actually the video title with Garret Thomas produced by Five Star Magic Media. I initially thought that Brian's asking the Café members if there's any questions. Duh on me!

Cleanup is actually fairly easy. You will switch the shaker back for the one in your front right pocket. You pick up the empty shaker with your right hand. "I guess we'll have to get the waitress to refill this." With your left hand holding the silk, you turn to your right as though you are looking to flag the waitress down with your silk. Switch the shakers as before, keeping the whole shaker hidden behind your hand, except the metal lid. "Hmm, lets try this instead." Start polishing the shaker, then simply place it on the table full of salt.
