What about the "ol" Latex Balloon's?

I here they make a sensible substitute.

Seems I read that here on this site somewhere??????????????

They are usually too thick to be convincing. There is a version that uses latex gloves. Those are also too thick.

Dental dam is sold under a different name to model builders who simply refer to it as latex hinge material.

PS ---The last dental dam I bought was from an Army Surplus store! It was new and cheap. (Less than a dollar a box)

I didn't know they had that stuff as civil war surplus. Union or confederate?

Richard,

There is no Civil War surplus down here. The South shall rise again! We keep that stuff ready!

Odd you would say that now. This week I had a visit from a New York Civil War reinactor. Last time he was here I gave him a set of Union saddlebags we found in a stash of old Union uniforms and tack that were used to impersonate Union soldiers during the war in Montgomery. Because they had been well stored in a brick tunnel they were in very good shape. He uses them.

Will I see you in Canton in May?

I'm glad it is someone who knows that not all the sand bags were in Viet Nam.

That's a nice stage.

Bob,
In case you are wondering...I thought I mentioned that I wrote the "Best Dam Tricks", copyright 1980, an entire booklet devoted to the dental dam. I also sell dam anytime you need it. Or, it comes with the book when you buy it.
http://www.tricks.ws However, aside from most magic shops who carry extra dam or the "pop" tricks, or Gozinta, you can also ask orthodontists to give you some. It is used in oral surgery which due to specialization, most dentists would not keep fresh on hand. If you know some physical therapists, the bands they use for physical therapy come in six colors and strengths, and the medium or light is perfect for the dam trick. Also, cheap that way.
Other sources, are drug stores who sell hygene products, as the newest uses for dental dam (in big squares) is for oral sex and sexual disease prevention druing such activity. Sold to the general public without license.
Of course, you can cut up rubber gloves, #11 clear balloons etc. But once again, give me a buz and I'll send you some. Still around .50 a sheet. My book comes with 2-4 sheets.

The book rights were sold to D Robbins who sells it under "rubber penetration tricks"

Rubber dam as we know it was only available starting in the 50's. It first came on the market as Dick Dubois Dam Pentration. Any dam older than a year or so is no DAM good, it deteriorates like old balloons and rubbers. Confederacy or Union, the latex wasn't around back then. I must admit tho, I never knew of the modeling stores having the rubber hinge. Acrobatic cards are mentioned in the booklet.

I was trying to remember who actually first marketed it. Lubor Fiedler was laying claim to it, but I remember selling it at Howard's Fun Shop as early as 1957.

Hello Magic Ian,

How's life since we were in Tampa? I hope it finally got warm there. I had to go to the Ozarks to get warm again. When Branson is warmer than Tampa, something is wrong!

You are right on about "other uses for dental dam". Of course the military surplus knows Uncle Sam does not buy it just for dentists! Most accidents happen at home. There it's true for STDs too.

I have your 1980 book. Good stuff!

Thanks for helping folks find a source of dental dam. I use it with a key that doesn't require a keyhole!

Guess where I got the idea!

I remember using it to make "changing" card fans too.

The local magic shop here in West Haven, CT sells exactly what your looking for pretty cheap, I think.

Their website is http://www.graffixmagic.com/ .

They probably don't have those listed on the site (I think the site is a forever work in progress), but you can just give Russ, the owner, a call and he'll take care of you. Use the contact page for the number. He's usually in 10-5ish Monday through Saturday Smile Good luck.
