Do you know of any singers with absolutely awful voices, who you like anyways? I can't get enough of Leonard Cohen in spite of his horrendous singing.

I almost said Tom Waits. But I couldn't tell if he was good or not. He's in tune and in control of his sound. Unlike Nico.

I exclude singer songwriters because they are presenting it the way they wrote it. Dylan is an interesting cat in that he actually can sing but has a put on voice he developed from Woody Guthrie for the folk scene. Then you have guys who are vocalist not singers or crooners, guys like Jim Morrison, who couldn't sing but had a unique style. Since the subject is bad singers I would have to pick the one that iritates me the most....Celine Dion. I give extra points to Britney Spears because while she can't sing she looks great not doing it well.

I had the opposite problem with an artist-
Joan Armatrading... Loved her voice, but didn't like her choice of songs.

Bad and favorite? Waits is unique, that is why (some) people love him. If a singer is bad, he will not your favorite . . . normally.

I remember some years ago, on a variety TV special, Raymond Burr sang the song "windmills of your mind" That was sad. First of all he recited it in that voice of his that has come to be so familiar to Perry mason or Ironside fans. He actually did not sing it at all. He took a wonderful song, and destroyed it. Secondly, he clearly did not know the song. He was reading cue cards. A few times he squinted to read them. I loved his work as an actor. Whose idea was it for him to do that?
