Let's span two eras in American bad-music history:

Marking myself as an incredible college-radio geek ('cause nobody else ever heard of her) - MRS. MILLER. Here, maybe you'll fall in love: http://www.mrsmillersworld.com/ - Florence Foster Jenkins got nothin' on her!
--------------------------

And for the modern era, I challenge anyone to beat: WING. I dare you to listen to her on her website. http://www.wingtunes.com/public/samples.aspx - one representative comment from someone who did: "OMIGOD! MY EARS! AAAAARGH!" - William Hung, crawl home in shame, you can't beat Wing!

Do any of you remember the movie "Paint your Wagon" and Clint Eastwood tried his hand at singing ? I think that was his only singing attempt and he just stuck to acting from than on.Mr.Eastwood is a very smart man.

Though I put Carol Channing up there, I do need to give her due respect for her response to Andy Kaufman on the Dinah Shore show; the guests included Channing and Robert Goulet and out walks Andy in nothing but a turban and dhoti (the wrapped loincloth) and he proceds to ripple his stomach whilst singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" and accompanying himself on a single hi-hat with a drumstick. Goulet stood there with his mouth open the whole time, but Carol Channing kept a very respectful expression and acted as if she were hearing a beautiful song. So maybe she ain't all that bad.

Don, I just picked up a copy of Paint Your Wagon cuz it is my favorite movie (a bomb at the box office). I will tell you that Clint Eastwood also sang in a couple other movies and had a duet with Fats Domino on the country charts a few years ago, Bar Room Buddies I think was the song.

William Shatner tried his hand a handful of times in the late 60's-early 70's.

Less than stellar results. But at least he gave it a go.

Then there's Clint's movie, "Honkeytonk Man" about a never-quite-made-it barroom country singer. He has a very "distinctive" voice.

I was hoping more for bad singers that you do like. Cohen, Dylan, Chapman, Nico, etc. Any Neil Young fans out there?

Love Neil Young. It's a tricky question, John. If someone else had Neil Young's voice and didn't know what to do with it, it'd be awful. But he took what he was given and made it great. There are guitars that I might play that sound to me like crud. Give that same guitar to John lee Hooker and he'll make it sing. Before Hendrix, Distortion was a negative feature of electrified guitars.

I used to have a vocal coach. He worked with me to reduce the tension I held in my neck. By straining, my singing voice became crackly and stressed. What would he have avised if James Brown had asked for a lesson?

I'm still comfortable with my Nico answer, because she was a model introduced into a band by an outside producer. She is awful on so many levels. But somehow the music sounds strangely pretty to me.

Is Chapman bad?

At a Paul McCartney concert a number of years ago, a tech made a recording of Linda McCartney's microphone during "Hey, Jude." It played on a local station one time. The guy who played it ended with the phrase, "He (Paul) must really love her."

I love Tom Waits.

Harvey Sid Fisher is a horrible singer/song writer. Look him up on myspace...his page has loads of his music on it.

Barroom Buddies did hit the charts (#1 I believe). But it was a duet with Merle Haggard, not Fats Domino.
