Title: 2WO FACED w/ David Forrest
Medium: DVD Arena: Close up Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic. This is an interesting DVD in that it covers 12 different routines all using gaffed cards. What makes this fun to me is that the DVD comes with 20 gaffed cards so you are all set to perform the routines that interest you. I like this because I’ve seen numerous routines on video that you think look great but you can’t do it if you are not equipped with the right gaffs or you don’t feel like buying an entire deck of gimmicked cards to do one routine. This makes this a nice package to get hold of if you are not a purist and don’t have issues using gaffs. The DVD, made by http://www.bigmedia.com and distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies, is interesting in itself. The sound is great, which I love, and the editing and angles are professionally done. The one thing that confused me was the thing was set up in what was suppose to be an old boxing training gym and some of the shots of the performances were oddly lit with lights behind the performer ((I have no clue who David Forrest is) and his face is often dark because of this. It is an instructional video, why the need to try to be artistic? Didn’t work for me and I think it takes away from the video but luckily they didn’t manage to ‘artistic’ it into oblivion. It still works. So a good product even with the poor attempt at being creative with the setting. David Forrest, he sounds like a Scot to me, does a good job in presenting the routines even if his style is a bit slow for my taste. If you see routines you like do try to alter them to fit your performing style. Since my liking some ones performing doesn’t reflect on them (I also find Paul Wilson style too slow and he’s great) it doesn’t mean much. The routines are all good ones, if not the best versions, of standard routines using gaffs. You will learn how to do some really amazing things, which gaffs are great for, and how to use them in your routines. If you are a purist you won’t be into this and if you are the type who just can’t manage spectators and can’t figure out how to handle gaffs and ringing them in and out forget it. You’ll just be frustrated but their use has been around for a couple hundred years and this is a fine introduction to them. The explanations are presented clearly (David accent can be tricky at times, at least to me) and completely enough for you to perform the routines. There is another fellow who is assisting with the explanation, sorry I don’t remember his name but he seems like a good fellow. There really isn’t much time dedicated to card management or people management and when using gaffs that is important but this is a video on how to do the routines so I guess you’ll have to bring some skills to the table with you in getting the gaffs in and out. Over all I liked this DVD because it does go over some very nice routines you can do with gaffs and you get the gaffs on Bicycle stock. The gaffs can also be used with other routines as well and after you learn these you can move onto other versions of the same effects. I’m having fun with these routines and I think you will too. |

I'm sorry, you are correct about the website. It was dark when I read it off the disk holder and combined with my poor eyesight I read it wrong. I did enjoy it, nice to see a complete package come out like that.

This has become one of my favorite DVD's
I love the fact that the cards used are STANDARD gaffs. Also the DVD production quality is VERY good. Top notch all the way.
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

Are the gaffs all found in a standard assortment deck. if not, I would say its not worth the money, if so then count me in.

It comes with the gaffs but I can't swear to them being in a standard set of double facers, it would make sense that they were.

Of the 11 effects, I really only enjoyed 2 of them, Blurred Deck and Jackass. I thought the rest were too convoluted or too many moves to accomplish the effect.
ps) one of the effects was the 2 Card Monte, if that helps. Rick

I was just not that impressed with this one. Convuluted is the right term to describe this one in my opinion. Patter didn't seem very well thought out.
Just my two cents anyway! |

So back to my question can most of these be performed with a regular assorted gaff deck????

Ryan,
The cards (21 in total) that come with the DVD are 'regular' gaffs that you will most likely find in an assortment deck - except one which is hand made. Rick Vancouver, rowdymagi5 and Nighthawk, sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it - each to their own. Incidentally, 2WO FACED received a glowing review in this months MAGIC magazine if anyone is interested in checking that out. Cheers, Dave.

David, thank you for answering my question bro. I just wanted to make sure I could replace the cards when need be. I have high hopes for the dvd, if it is anything like your past productions it will be nothing short of amazing. I am placing my order......now.

Regardless they are professionals, who haven't always gotten their material for free, so I am sure that they have a sense of a good product and a bad product, and who said they get their products free anyways?? I am sure the company has to dish out the money at some point along the way. Have you seen dave's past work?? It is very high quality magic and It doesn't surprise me one little bit that the dvd got glowing reviews by MAGIC magazine.

... don't want to be funny 'Superior Magic'(everyone has a right to their own opinion after all), but the MAGIC Magazine review was by Peter Duffie.
I am sure that nobody would suggest that someone as well regarded and highly inspirational as Peter Duffie would hand out a glowing review simply because they received a £20 DVD for gratis!?!? |

One other thing, as far as I know, most people who review things in magazines, be they magic tricks, movies, books, music cds etc. receive the things they review for free. Does thay mean they give everything a glowing review? Certainly not. In fact, for every good review you read, how many bad ones do you read? A good reviewer reviews objectively.

I do understand that every one can not and will not be pleased with everything which is just the way life goes. I do what to bring up the pattering point though. Please keep In mind that Dave is Scottish and as with myself also, has a very thick accent. The need to slow things down and pronounce things a little bit more to make it understandable may make it seem slow paced or less thought out. This is for the buyers benefit. For a small example. Stu ( the camera guy extrodiner) and Rachel ( Owens pretty half) seemed lost if Dave and I would just talk normal. This was entertaining at times but it became really apparent that there is a need for slowing down and pronouncing. I hope that explains that a little for you.
On the review side. Yes these companies do receive a free copy to review but please keep in mind that they WILL give it an honest review. I have seen some absolute and shocking reviews in MAGIC Magazine which I will take as fare as the people reviewing them are respected, trusted and knowledgeable members of the magic community. I have this product and to be honest I love it. I am working in routines from this to my working environment as they are to good to pass up. I am also happy that a company is finally pushing magic media in a direction that has been long over due. Good production quality along with great magic. NOT just another DVD out there to keep the names out there. Finally a company that takes PRIDE in the work. Yet again this is just my views and opinions and as Dave has stated each to there own. Just my 2p and have a great day guys... be safe Alan Rorrison http://www.alanrorrison.com |

I too really enjoyed this DVD in fact I regularly use two of the routines in my own performances.
Superior Magic, to imply that the review by Peter Duffie was positive just because he got a free copy is ridiculous. I assume you don’t often read Magic magazine, as if you did you’ll have seen plenty of bad reviews. This is an excellent DVD and it rightly received a great review. Simple as that! Iain. |

This is a great dvd. I am very picky about using gaffed cards. I have to feel that the effect can't be done with regular cards and gets strong enough reaction to warrant the gaff. The gaff has to be something that is easily brought into play. It also has to be easily ditched after the effect is over. It has to be manageable in terms of pocket space, etc. With these considerations I am adding three effects on this dvd to my set. Two others will probably make it in soon.
Superior Magic: if you read Magic Magazine you will see that in the same issue (May 2007) there is another product which is absolutely slammed. There is another product in which the reviewer states that "this product is not right for me, but may very well be great for you." I have been reading Magic Magazine for over 10 years and have seen many, many items get luke warm to downright poor reviews. Just like any other critic, if these guys are always saying that everything is great and people feel they get burned, the reviewer will lose his integrity and ultimately his job. A critic of any kind is only worth reading if they are willing to tell the truth about the bad products. All of the Magic Magazine reviewers are worth reading. And Mr. Duffie is right about this dvd; it is a worthy investment of your time and money. Paul |
