Once I start doing shows I will do shows in any neighborhood. I am use to working in "bad" neighborhoods due to my job (Paramedic.
Jim, if you are concerned about your safety while doing shows..etc, did you consider getting your concealed handgun license?

A CCW is easy in VA where I live and with the documented training I've had it's even easier. DC however is a no guns, no way, no how area. MD isn't much better. Besides, with a child's party for example, keeping track of my gun is the _LAST_ thing I want to have to think about.
I have carried concealed 24/7 in other environments, so I'm very comfortable with idea, but I don't think I'd go packing into a b-day party. |

I can't believe someone actually thinks you'd carry at a kid party. Sheesh!

Caller: "I'm interested in having you come to perform at my 4 year olds party."
Magi: "Well that's great, how do you feel about live animals?" Caller: "I don't believe animals should be used for entertainment!" Magi: "Alright, I can respect that; I will leave Whiskers at home. How do you feel about concealed weapons?" Caller: "Oh, sure, that's no problem. But can we get a picture of little Johnny holding the gun?" A concealed weapon could be a pretty nice add on in some areas I guess.

I have performed for NATO troops in war zones, but turned down opportunities to perform in venues at home that I felt were unsafe.
If there is a shopping mall that has a high incidence of shootings or other violent crimes, then I will not perform there. I tell the agent about my concerns and respectfully decline. I am not a superhero. I cannot cure society's woes or injustices. I am merely an entertainer, human and imperfect. Since Pat and I do not have a children's birthday party show, we have never had to face this decision when called by a parent from any particular neighbourhood. I'm not sure how someone would respectfully handle that and am glad that I do not have to. Just my two cents on the topic. Each of us will make their own decision on the topic. All the best, Rob |

See, I agree with Rob here. I have twenty-two years experience as a cop and fatality investigator. I don't scare easy and I never back down. But, I've learned when and where to use caution. There are some neighborhoods that simply have a dangerous reputation and common sense needs to rule over compassion. Areas that taxis and pizza delivery won't venture into are on my taboo list and with good reason. Better safe than hospitalized, ya'll.
Incidentally, Angio, I know you were joking about the CCW at a party. I HOPE you were joking about a CCW at a party. I carried two sidearms nearly 24/7 for 22 years and usually carry one now, but when I arrive to perform at a party or event in character, those sidearms are locked into a gun vault in the boot of my car. I believe in the individual right to carry a licensed sidearm...but guns and kids don't mix under these conditions.

I did a Halloween party for the recreation center of a housing project in my area. They actually managed very well. The only time I had a problem was with the "popcorn production" (Magic Digest by George Anderson). (digression; There was a British television show called "Blakes 7." In one episode, Blake is in a slave labor gang that swamp the food trough at the infrequent feeding time. Blake starts organizing the prisoners, at feeding time he barks out; "Stop! One handful, one at a time." pointing to the old man who rarely gets any food because he's shoved out of the way. "Starting with you." end digression)
That moment shot through my mind as I stood there with a bowl of magically produced popoorn and the hordes of Hell began to decend on me for some of it. "Stop!" I barked. (And by God, they did!) "Everybody gets a little bit. One at a time." Pointing to a little girl who'd been in front and had this look on her face that said she <knew> she was about to get trampled; "Starting with her!" It worked! Another time, another venue, it might have gotten me shot. (Or at least chastised by the parents for "ordering" their little darlings around.) But that one time, it worked!

Wow! I'm impressed by all those here who aren't afraid and never back down. Personally, I have a pretty strong "fear factor" which has kept me out of trouble several times in my life!
Still, I'd rather not have to "prove" how manly I am. If I were in construction, I'd rather be inside doing drywall than on the roof laying shingles. I sure am glad so many of you want do venture into high-crime areas -- take 'em ALL in my town! I can keep plenty busy where I won't have to fear for my safety or possessions. And, Jim, you assume too much. I saw no posts (other than yours) that equated "poor" with "bad" or made any comments regarding various cultures. That's a creation of your own imagination. Incidentally, I've done shows for people linked to organized crime and never felt safer in my life. |

I suspect those who have never "backed down" haven't been challenged with a gun or a knife or a gang or had their stuff stolen while doing a show.
In another thread I mentioned working a park where there was an event. The park sign said, "No Guns in the Pool Area". Guns in the rest of the park were fine. One associate got robbed there in the middle of the festival with the park full of people and cops. I go by that park now and notice that even during the weekday daytime there is no one in the park. If you don't screen where you do your shows at some point you will probably have an experience that changes your mind. Good luck. |

Who you work for is your personal choice.
I'm particular about the company I keep. And in the less salubrious areas they never serve the best quality smoked Scottish salmon for te. I am particular about that, too.
