I am curious what is everyone's favorite method of producing a silk before producing a bird from a silk?
Obviously producing every silk you use in some magical way looks much better than just grabbing a silk from your pocket or table and proceeding. I like flash string to silk, vernet fountain silk ball,Silk to egg backwards, as egg to silk, Balloon to silk, flip tip double diamond cut silk production... I've used silk to rose but I'm not crazy about it... Ball to silk... hmmm... Which ones am I not listing? Which do you use and like and why? Steven |

Hi Steven,
You pick up a single silk and hold it by one corner and give it a flick. Another silk appears tied to the opposite corner. You pull them apart (the knot melts)and you flick the new silk with the same result. I produce 5 different colored silks this way and then a dove. I learned the roll up and knots over 2 decades ago from another magician so I'm not sure who created this particular silk production, Slydini I think. You can see a little part of it on our promo video on our web site http://www.evansandevans.ca/video.htm All the best, Rob |

For an opening effect, you can roll a silk and place it in the crook of the arm at the elbow folding your jacket over it just a bit. You can move your hands quite freely and then reach out to grab the silk. Takes a little practice but with the right timing, it seems that the silk magically appears in the air.

Dave: That's always been one of my favorites, but I do it a bit differently. I have the silk palmed in my left hand and I push back the sleeves of my Wizard Robe, first the left sleeve and then the right. As I push back my right sleeve, my left hand pushes the silk into the fleshy part of my arm at the crook of the elbow. Fortunately, I have enough flesh to hide the silk on my bare arm, but that then leaves me free to show both hands empty. At the moment the silk appears in the air above my right arm, my left hand gets the loop for the dove as my right hand catches the silk to cover the move.

Sounds nice and very effective. Jeff McBride does a similar production with a rubber band attached to the silk.

Knots-Off Silk is an easy way to entertain and get there. (Don't use the silks with holes cut in them.)
This build up really slams the audience to think they haven't already seen everything the silk could offer. (I've caught cameramen zooming out thinking that an assistant will be coming on stage with another prop. When Knots-Off is over they think the routine is essentially over. Surprise!) Hey RJE, I saw the silk productions in your video, and they looked great! Anyone know where you can find this?
And Bob, that's good to hear that the Knot Off Silk provides the offbeat to make the steal, and the opportunity to end the routine with the dove production! Thanks, -Vinnie |

Vinney, this silk production is quite old. No offense Rob. Mr Electric performs it in his light act and several other modern day workers have it in their act. I don't remember for sure but I think the Hammners use it as well. I first saw Al Delage perform it and that was about 45 years ago. In any case, re-read Rob's post and you should get a pretty good idea of how it's done. It doesn't use a gimmick. Sounds like it's time to break down and buy Rice's encyclopedia of silks to learn some silk folds
Hey Rob, I watched you vid and I liked your line about tieing the the ropes being easier when the pole was smaller. Very tactful.

Thanks Dave. Sometimes I get it right
Also, no offense taken. Like I said, I learned this from another performer many years ago, and I have no idea where he got it from. All the best, Rob |

I found a new one, how about Pavel's ball to silk (from Pavel's cabaret silk magic?)
Man if that doesn't look like real magic! Steven |

Pavel has a real reputation for flashy silk work. He should be touring the USA again soon.

The Snap Silk Production as Mr. Electric uses is explained in his DVD video. He has a tip or 2 as well. If interested you can find it here:
http://www.stevensmagic.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=7116 The original that is called the Diminishing Silk can be found here in book form: http://www.silkkingmagic.com/Rice's%20C......lors.htm This uses different size silks, whereas Mr. Electric's version use all the same size silks. Marconic published in his book on magic a version that did not use a knot to tie the silk corner together, thus eliminating the action of releasing the knots before separating them. |

Doing a card to silk is a great way to transition between the card portion of your act and producing a dove.

Change a Fantasio Candle to a silk, then produce your bird.

Snap silks are great to produce many silks then steal a silk fountatin or bird or waht every.
I can recomend my good freind Duane Laflin has a version of snap silks that does not require you to tie the silks. http://www.lockfamilymagic.com its called snapsilks tehy are closed you ntil october 2009 as they are moving their invetory so check them out in october. I have been using a fantaio candle to vanish and produce a silk then using the silk to prduce the dove. I use the McBride card to silk that's in Manipulation without tears. I don't really like using silks that much but as a way to transition from card manipulation to a dove production it's too good to pass up.
